Sup guys! New here but been reading these forums forever! Just wanted to share some interesting experience. I'm 27 and just finished grad school. I had receding hairline since like 20. Before 24'ish, it was pretty manageable, I just used hair styling products to mess with the front and minimize the appearance of receding temples and it worked just fine. At 24, the hairline gotten to Norwood 2 (maybe even a little bit more) and it was definitely difficult to hide it without resorting to the dreaded comb-over looks.
That's when I started minoxidil twice a day. First year was pretty good, the temples thickened up and some new vellus hair popped up. Eventually, the temples started developing some slight redness in the area of minoxidil application. That's when I introduced Nizoral to the regimen. It allowed me to keep using minoxidil for another year, fighting off most of irritation on my temples. To be honest though, the efficiency of minoxidil kinda started slowing down, I just kept using to maintain whatever I had, but the hairline started thinning again. Finally, last winter, my temples suddenly developed extreme itch and red raised bumps precisely in the areas of minoxidil/nizoral application. I went to dermatologist and he told me I had Seborheic Dermatitis and told me to take a break from harsh Nizoral and gave me some topical steroid ointment that helped clear up Seborrheic dermatitis outbreaks. But I had to apply it in the morning and evening, which meant I had to quit rogaine for a while, too. YES I went through the dreaded minoxidil-quitting shed, turns out it's very real lol. Also, doctor told me to use SLS-free shampoo instead of nizoral to avoid dry itchy scalp.
One year later, my hair is A LOT better and thicker than during my minoxidil years. I am still on the SLS-free shampoo and it never irritates my scalp. I actually tried nizoral again at my friend's house the other day, and yep, it dried the **** out of my scalp lol. I also pop the Walmart's "Hair for Men" multivitamins twice a day (it has ****load of biotin, saw palmetto, iron/zinc and other minerals/vitamins). And I also apply Folligen cream couple times a week, I'm not sure it does much but it definitely clears up any hints of redness, though!
I know I am probably not regrowing or stimulating any hair right now, but my existing hair is so thick and healthy that it kinda minimizes the appearance of receding hairline anyways.
Ironic, ain't it? Apparently, for some guys, minoxidil/nizoral can do more harm than good.
