minoxidil: nothing to lose?

What's up guys. I'm 24; I first noticed my receding hair line a year ago (god, it feels so weird actually admitting that to people). Further inspection of photos showed that it had actually started several years earlier. I guess I had sort of noticed it, but I always put it off by saying, "eh, it's just a bad haircut," or "my hairline is just naturally like that; no one can be balding in fricking college." (I don't know why everyone's always bad-mouthing denial. It worked great for me!!!)

So naturally, I was quite devastated. At the insistance of my then-girlfriend (who was very supportive), I went and saw a doctor. He told me that I had caught it in time; I was lucky because it wasn't so bad, etc. and put me on Propecia. It really isn't too bad; if I style my hair you can barely notice. But I know it's there, you know? And I'm afraid that more is coming. . .

So, it has now been a year on the Propecia (about halfway through I started on Nizoral). And really, there hasn't been much of a change. . .which is a good thing. (There's a change in my attitude 7 times a day though. I'll see myself in the mirror and be like, "hey, sexy dude," but then a few hours later my temple will look a bit bigger and I'll drop to my knees and scream "WHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?" Maybe I'm just bi-polar )

So, things seem to be ok. My question is this: should I try to use minoxidil on my temples? I always assumed it would be a waste of time and money; but a bunch of you guys have said that it has worked. I picked up a pack of the generic 2% last night, and I figured that I'd splash a little bit on my temples twice a day. If nothing happens, then at least I tried, right? And if I do regrow even a little bit, well, then, bitchin!!

So is this a good idea? Would I really be stupid not to even try it? My fear is that once I start, someone will be like, "now you can't stop or your brains will leak out of your eyeballs!!!!" I figure that I've got nothing to lose. Am I right?

Thanks for reading, everybody

yo i think my hairloss is kinda like yours. My freakin temples have gotten bare and i am also on propecia. I just added 5% minoxidil to my regiment a few days ago. I am only applying it to my temples 1 time a day. Usually at night, but sometimes i can, i apply it 2 times a day. Truely if you want to regrow your temples the only way to go is with minoxidil. Propecia may stop the recession but you won't get your temples filled in.

If you want to regrow your temples then yes add minoxidil. But after the 2%, get the 5%. Its much better. Remember not to skip on your applications and be consistent and I bet you will your temples much better then they are now in 6 months to a year. Patience is the key.

Thanks guys.

Ok, so am I wasting my time with the 2% then? I chose that over the 5% because I was afraid of blasting my scalp with a chemical I wasn't even sure I should have been using, you know? I don't want to throw out a three months supply of the 2% though. . .perhaps I will takes blue's suggestion and get the 5% to use at night, while still using the 2% in the morning.

Also, how do you guys apply it to your temples. . .the dropper or the sprayer? Both ways are rather messy. . .do you spread the 1mL dose over the entire hairline, or do you concentrate two 1 mL doses on each temple?

You are not wasting your time with 2%, its just not as effective. Did you get it from walgreens? They will take any return, if you have a receipt. If you are only losing in your temples, then 1ml per application is sufficient. Don't worry about blasting your temples with minoxidil. I use 1.5 ml for my entire scalp, front to rear.

Yes, 2% is a waste of time.
