I've been using minoxidil 5% on my hairline for about a year now, and I am satisfied with the results. My temples have grown back a little, and my middle widow's peak part is thicker. I have shoulder length hair, though, so the length of my hair isn't thick, obviously. And I wouldn't really describe my hairline hair as "thick." Just average. The height of my hairline has not changed dramatically. It's actually barely noticeable, if at all. There are just more hairs (but I am still seeing new growth that aren't just baby hairs, so I'm hopeful - but not necessarily optimistic - that I will defy the odds and continue to experience growth, haha). I most certainly do not regret using it. I think using it earlier could have possibly benefited me, but I caught my hair loss fairly early anyway so it's not like there would have been much to regrow. minoxidil doesn't stop balding, though. So I'm still debating whether to start finasteride or not, and I've started a new regime with experimental stuff that I'm going to try for at least 6 months. I have a thread of my own, but I haven't posted pictures yet (but I do plan to).
