Hi folks, I'm new. Great forum, glad I found it. I've been on finasteride 1mg for about 1.5 years now, and just started minoxidil topical 5% about 2 weeks ago. The propecia has done ok maintaining my diffuse hair loss, but it has definately gotten worse over time even on it, so I decided to add the other agent. I was wondering if people tend to get off finasteride eventually and just use the minoxidil alone? From what I've read, people usually do it the other way around, but I think I'd like to just stick with 1 or the other if I can.

Thanks for any help in advance. :)

minoxidil grows and thickens hairs- it does not maintain it like finasteride or dutasteride does. If you were to choose one drug to be on for long term maintenance of your hair, it should be finasteride or dutasteride instead of minoxidil. If you are still losing hair after 1.5 years on finasteride you should switch to dutasteride, which is a stronger 5ar inhibitor.

Being that dutasteride inhibits both type I and II 5-AR, how are the side effects compared to finasteride? I have some side effects from finasteride, minor, but I can tell they're there. I'm not sure if I want any enhancements of any of the side effects to where they cause more noticeable problem.

I think I'm going to try the dutasteride. From what I've read, side effects seem to be comparable to finasteride for the most part. I may try to go eod to ease into it, but I hear every day is the most optimal from alot of the veteran posters here.
