[h=1]Study: Looking old may be a sign of heart risks[/h]By MARILYNN MARCHIONE | Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Want a clue to your risk of heart disease? Look in the mirror. People who look old — with receding hairlines, bald heads, creases near their ear lobes or bumpy deposits on their eyelids — have a greater chance of developing of heart disease than younger-looking people the same age do, new research suggests.

could it have something to do with the distress baldness creates, rather than a direct relation to baldness itself?

Oh could it be that heart disease causes baldness? Either way, it is nature's way of punishing bald guys. Survival of the fittest if you will.

correlation isnt always causation, its suggestive sure but its no guarantee

look up the connection between diabetes, insulin resistance, heart disease, and male pattern hair loss. interesting stuff

I read the article, but it doesn't give the impression that baldness CAUSES heart disease. Another one of your shark jumping leaps of logic I suppose! I do hope you're going to see your GP regularly though...

if baldness was a weak trait then natural selection would have weeded out the male pattern baldness gene through evolution.

going bald must have some advantages but I'm damned if I can work out what

its supposed to indicate age.

"hey look im older! give me social status!" is basically the current theory as to why male pattern baldness evolved.

when u think about it its quite profound, hair loss is the PRIMARY indicator of age in males. men age better than women in every aspect except for losing hair, altho women lose it too in a different pattern

Not true. For a trait to survive, it is only sufficient for the carriers to live long enough to have babies and see them to adulthood (so live to age 35 or so). If they drop dead at age 40, it does not matter with respect to evolution.

correlation isnt always causation

Came in to post this. Correlation does not imply causation. There are several confounding variables at work here, and frankly I'm not sure how this qualifies as news.

There isn't anything in that article claiming baldness causes heart disease, it simply talks about a correlation. You're interpreting it incorrectly if you think otherwise. It's unsurprising to me, and not the least bit unsettling to be honest. Why would I assume the opposite to be true (people with heart disease having a full head of hair, no wrinkles, etc). Generally speaking heart disease is more common in older patients, as are baldness and wrinkles.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys look for bad news and try to fit square pegs into round holes in order to wallow in your own self pity further, rather than taking the time to actually think critically.
