Went to talk to a new dermatologist today Dr. Robert Albergo:

I was in full composure.. i bought a list of questions to ask him about.

hair loss...

he said there is only 2 proven things that can be done.. yup you've guessed them... propecia and rogaine

I told him that I was on propecia and said that it seemed like I was losing more hair.. he said i've probabaly been losing hair for a while, i just took a interest in it when i actaully started noticing, and this is when most people start counting their hair.

I asked him about T.E.. since i had pnemonia 4 months ago..

he said, not likely. but if it is Telogen Effluvium then it wouldnt hurt if you took propecia. and things would eventually get better.

I told him that i was using nizoral/t-gel.. multivit...flaxseed.. saw palmetto..

he said none of those are proven to help hair loss and that i'm probabaly just wasting my money.. but if it makes me happier knowing that i'm using every product that someone claims helps then keep doing it.

I asked him if it would be beneficial to test for hormones.. dht levels, thyroid levels..

he said no.. ( i was a little suprised about this)

I asked him about dutasteride.. he was probabaly just protecting his own *** when he told me that he's never heard of it. I gave him a description.. then he said he woudlnt ever advise someone to take anything that's not approved by the FDA.. (which i understand)

I asked him about gyno..
he looked me over and said tests could be ran.. he couldnt do it.. I'd have to go to my primary.. he says it highly unlikely though..
he says if would give me peace of mind to have the tests done.. but didnt reccomend another Doctor to do it.

I asked about shedding... ! he says that most people do not shed. I told him that i visit a forum where they say shedding is the norm..

he says, shedding is not the norm, and usually hair lost is hair gone. very few people are actually able to regrow hair regardless of what theyre' using..

last thing suprised me..
he told me to use rogaine.. I have a thinning top, not a bald spot.. more of just a nasty receeding hair line and thin frontal.

i said.. i thought that was only for the vertex ... he says.. no, it's beneficial all over.

so i guess i'll be on rogaine now!?!

says since you cant pick your parents, you just have to live with what you got.. he kinda hunched i was unhappy with my current state..

Well, he's either very uninformed or wanted the most bang for your buck -- as in he wanted you there for the least amount of time and the same money.

I see it in all medical practices these days. Just recently I inquired about a full medical examination by my GP, and the receptionist asked how many 10 minute slots that would take up!

I've been through a shed and I can tell you for 100% fact that I'm regrowing hair that I thought had been lost.

how does a doctor check for gyno? what kind of tests does he run.
he plays with your tits
HAHA jk

but seriously,
did your doctor actually say that humans dont shed hair? Or did he mean in regards to starting treatment. Either way, he sounds like a moron to me.

I have to agree with Freestyle. Today, I noticed a person in my office who has regrown substantial amount of hair. He has been with our office for about 1 year. In that time, he has regrown hair from his vertex through his crown. I have seen it. He even has a tuft of hair on his front.

I have also seen two guys in my gym regrow hair over their crown and parts of their front. I don't believe those are hair transplants, either.

I have not confronted any of these guys, as this is obviously something very awkward. I am dying to ask, though.

Edit to add -- The office guy had a lot of hair lost; you would not believe the amount of regrowth this represents. I am convinced he is on P. If so, this will make all the anxiety and sheds worth stomaching.

What was that you found surprising exactly?

What I find surprising SE is the Doctor told him "hair gone is hair lost".

Then he recommends Rogaine?! What's the point if hair gone is hair lost!? :?

He will need to refer you to a Endocinologist (a Dr with an interest in hormonal disorders).

I agree with Zimmy. As male pattern baldness is caused by DHT would it not be more appropriate to see an Endocrinologist? But in the UK it isnt a waste of money because seeing a Derm is free! (long live the NHS!!!) Unlike over in the US where you have to reach into your wallet everytime you get poorly :p .
