My experience with dutasteride

I have always been paranoid of hair loss, despite naturally having a head of thick, course, dark hair. When I was in my 20's, I used Propecia off-and-on, but never consistently. I noticed some very slight receding during my 20's, but no noticeable loss anywhere else.

In 2005 or 2006, when Avodart (dutasteride) was first released, I began using it. At that time in my life, I still had not experienced any noticeable hair loss, except for some slight receding in the front. However, I knew I was at a high-risk age and decided it was time to get serious about prevention. I started using a minimum of .5mg Avodart daily. Some days, I would take 2 gel caps, maybe twice per week. I was 31 years old when I started Avodart. I used it consistently from its release in 2005 or 2006 to October 2009. I rarely, if ever, missed a day and took it at the same time every day.

During the years I was on Avodart, I noticed slow and gradual hair loss all over -- front, mid, and crown. I was disappointed because I was losing hair while on the medication, but I was still fairly happy with the overall state of my hair, considering my age. I was most concerned about the crown and even though I could feel it was getting a bit thinner back there, no one could visually see any difference. My girlfriend, hair stylist, friends, etc., could notice no loss on the crown. When I took photos and looked at them, I couldn't notice much, if anything.

In October 2009, my Doctor suggested I briefly go off Avodart and allow it to clear my system so we could do some medical testing. While off the medication, around December 2009, I quickly lost a significant amount of hair on my left temporal area. I'm estimating a patch of hair about 1" X 1". This happened really fast. In January 2010, I began to notice that my crown was feeling a bit "flat" as if the hair was thinning. I had the usual suspects examine it for me and no one seemed to be too concerned or thought that there was loss on the crown.

At the beginning of this month, February 2010, with the medical testing behind me, I decided to go on Propecia instead of Avodart. I've been taking the finasteride at 2.5mg/day. Hopefully, it will start working and doing its thing soon because yesterday I decided that my crown was definitely feeling funny and noticeably thin, so I took some pics and was shocked at what I saw. There's no longer any question about it - I've got a noticeable "spot" on my crown. I also went to get a hair cut yesterday and my stylist indicated there had been a significant change since she had seen me 4 weeks ago.

I am sick about this and absolutely shocked at how quickly this occurred, while off the medication. I am attaching a pic below.

About the Avodart, I would also like to add that the only side effects that I noticed, during the years I used it, was dry skin. I never had an issue with dry skin before, but while on Avodart, the skin on my face, arms, hands, legs, knees and elbows became really dry. Oh, and one other thing that was definitely related to the Avodart was a reduction in the volume of my ejaculate. I would say this was reduced by at least 50%.

"I've got a noticeable "spot" on my crown."

Is it a recent event? It could have several months?

In about a 4 week period, my hair stylist went from not being able to notice any significant loss to "Whoa, I think we may have a problem here!" I could also tell that very recently the crown started to feel differently - more flat back there.

Change of hair stylist or hurry to the doctor ;)

Not, seriously I doubt it very much, that in only one month appears this crown.

to the OP,
why can't you go back on avodart if you believe it worked?
don't waste time.

I could, but that's one of the dilemmas - Avodart or Propecia?

During the years on Avodart, my hair definitely thinned some and the front receded. Nothing major, but Avodart did not stop it in its tracks.

I just started Propecia in hopes that it will be more effective than Avodart. I can't afford to continue to lose hair, even if it's slow and gradual like it was on Avodart. At this point, I need it stopped completely and I want to try for some regrowth.

knowing avodart to be stronger than finasteride, I can't understand how you will grow hair with finasteride and not with dutasteride.

even the scary stories about dutasteride are mainly for the temples and front, not crown.

i haven't seen a single case of finasteride protecting the crown when dutasteride has failed.

Well...I just started Propecia. Should I go back on Avodart instead?

Is the general consensus here that Avodart is the most effective of the 2 drugs?

Hi Cucbura, welcome to the forum :)

For what it's worth, I have been on Finasteride and Dutasteride for several years each, and I *think* had better results from the Dutasteride (a little more density and regrowth of vellus).

However, I'm on such a large selection of other medication, it's very hard to be sure which of the drugs gave the best results alone.

*UPDATE*

After starting this thread in February 2010, I started using Rogaine Foam 2X per day in conjunction with Propecia. I've been on this routine for over a year now and I'm not happy with the results. Over the past year, I've lost a significant amount of hair in the front temple areas, particularly on one side, which used to be my good side. I think I'm also losing ground on my crown. I seem to be one of those individuals who does not respond well to hair loss drugs, unfortunately.

Get back on the dutasteride.
You're crazy for dropping it in favor of finasteride if you had no problems with it, it's pretty well accepted to be better at preventing hairloss than finasteride.

As I mentioned earlier, it isn't as if I had no problems on Avodart. I was losing the battle when I was on it. Things just got a lot worse when I stopped. Now, I wonder if dutasteride would regrow the hair on my crown. Rogaine clearly isn't working.

Your crown looks fine tbh
I appreciate that, but I fear that in a year or two I'll lose the hair in the middle of the thinning area and have a big bald spot. :(

dutasteride is a much more powerful drug than finasteride, dutasteride was obviously working if your hair thinned rapidly once you stopped it. There is no guarantee that any drug will stop hairloss completely, slowing it down is sometimes the best you can achieve.
If i was in your situation I would get back on dutasteride and look to adding something else in to your regime.

As previously noted in this thread, I've been using Rogaine for over a year now.

Something else I'd like to mention. I'm almost completely certain that Rogaine aggravated hair loss in the front (temples). When I started using it, I quickly started losing a lot of hair on my temples. I attributed that to "shedding" which I had read a lot about. However, it never stopped. Now, a year later, I've finally decided to stop using Rogaine in the front, but have lost a significant amount of hair.

el_duterino switched to RU58841 when dutasteride failed to maintain his hair. Topical anti-androgens like RU58841 and CB-03-01 are more effective and safer to use than reductase inhibitors. The downside is that they're considered as research chemicals, and they're not available in the pharmacies. Just a tip.

Dutasteride is more effective than finasteride.

Seriously, your crown doesn't look that bad, even in the first pic. Might as well be a cowlick IMO.
