The last time I got a haircut was in my last year of University. It looked like COMPLETE crap. I may as well have told the lady "It doesnt look like I'm losing my hair badly enough...could you fix that for me? thanks" I let it grow a bit and then saw a picture of myself and started crying like a little girl. I've been shaving it ever since, but just recently let it grow. I would occasionally shave the sides, since they were so much thicker and longer. I would fear the barber. At some point, I knew I was going to have to get one. My hair was uneven and just gross. I went to the MENS cutting place by my house, luckily it wasn;t full of thick haired bastards twice as old as me and the barber was bald. I knew he'd know what to do. He did an awesome job, I was so excited at how my new hair looked, I tipped the guy $5. I'm not sure what the point of the story is, just wanted to say that I got my first haircut in over 6 years, and that the person who cuts it CAn make a huge difference. I'd suggest male stylists and cutters cause some women just don't understand. I'm not trying to be sexist or anything, just pointing out an observation. My last 5 haircuts (I remember them) were by women at one of those Magic Cuts places. They'd also make comments like "wow, you have thin hair" loud enough for the entire place to hear. Since my hair isnt all that to begin with, I figured "why pay so much to have it cut?" But this dude did a bang up job, made me look a lot younger. I was just wondering if anyone else had barber fears.

Been there. I stopped going to stylists/hairdressers 5 years ago. They just seem determined to make it worse. I bought a buzzer and use whatever guard I feel like. Wonderful things.

I cut my own hair for that exact same reason. Last time i went to a male barber, I was quite pleased. However, that was back in 1999 and my hair loss wasn't as severe. Now, I do cut my own hair by shaving the sides and back while I let the top grow as much as it can. I have curly hair with thinning in the crown and up front. I do what I can to cut it to hide those thinning spots. Seems to work out well. I know how my hair behaves and cut it accordingly. I honestly don't know when or if I can muster up as much courage to go the barber again. I am 27, fairly young, and don't know how to tell a barber to cut my hair to hide those thinning spots.

I use 2 mirrors to do my own hair - the larger one on the bathroom wall and a small hand-held one reflecting that image back to me.

I use a number 1 blade for the sides and lower back of my head and a number 2 blade to blend that area into the area above which I do with a number 3.....a whole tapering/gradual thickening effect.

I then use a pair of surgical scissors (fine and very sharp) to even out any area of unevenness. (The most tedious and nit-picking part)
People are shocked when I tell them I cut my own hair. :freaked2:

I actually really enjoy doing it - it's like a fortnightly sculpture lesson. :D

Been doing this for about 14 years now...wouldn't have it any other way.

You know, for that EXACT reason I didnt go for all those years. Something about telling a room full of people that I have thin hair, and need a "special" haircut. As pathetic as it sounds, It took me like all all day to muster up enough courage, walk in there and actually tell the guy that I was thinning and if he could help me out. Damn, I still can;t look the cashier in the eye when I'm buying thickening shampoo. I thought cutting my own hair was a good sollution and honestly, it didn;t look that bad. But the barber saw the hair, had a better view of it than I would, and certainly more experience. He left certain parts longer and did an excellent job of blending the sides. It's not a styled combover, just a better cut head of hair. the last time I remember being as happy about my hair as I am now is 8 years ago. For those of you with barber fears, I reccomend trying it out. For me personally it felt more comfortable in an empty shop (I went at 1:30) and a bald barber. Just might be a load off your back, you never know.
