Went to the Dr's this morning in the hope he would get to the bottom of my hair loss, ive been thinning for around 8 years now, its worst at the crown but all so over the top of my hair, no receding hair line though. Ive tried Rogaine with Nizoral with no real effects, so thought i could maybe get a prescription for the much talked about Propecia, but he totally dismissed me. He looked at my scalp for all of 3 seconds and said oow your scalp looks pretty red so i said is it heredatory hair loss and he said no your too young. Too young!!!! im 28 years of age. He said i would go the chemist and get yourself some Almond oil and that will strengthen your scalp and help hair regrow, and to stop usuing Nizoral as there could be a chemical in it thats making it worse. I mean this is coming from a Dr. I was totally shocked with how he dismissed me, any body had any similar experiences with there Dr and what moves did you make next? Thanks

Haven't had the same experience. But if I were in you're shoes i'd get a new doctor.

I think propecia isn't looked upon very well in the medical field. Doctors do get brownie points for prescribing and in you're case, not prescribing certain medicines.

The doctor here seems more interested in perfect personal reputation then a patients actual need. Go to another one.

Yeah mate... time to get a new doctor. It seems strange getting told crap like that from someone who is qualified and makes a living out of diagnosing problems and curing them. (and quite a living I might add...)

Get yourself a good doctor who you can rely on and can continue seeing for years. Someone who you can trust and are not intimidated by. I once went to a doctor who was really old (like 60 something) and really creeped me out. He was shaking, and wouldn't look at me while I was talking to him. I was there for a sexual health checkup and I swear I wanted to walk out of there. That and having my fair share of foreign doctors, who can barely understand me, and just want to get you out of there with a medical certificate and a script to something you don't need.

It is for those reasons I don't go to doctors. I do my own diagnosis and determine my own course of actions.... (within reason of course)

Thaks for the replies guys, yeah im thinking of changing Dr's after today, he's been our family Dr since i was a child and my Mum was really shocked at what happened today. ive been doing loads of research on Propecia and i think ill just go ahead and get myself some of the generic kind a. Also can anyone recommend a good hair thickener shampoo or serum that can be used along with Rogaine and nizoral. thanks again.

It's not a surprise, we are talking about an English GP. Their job is mainly to act as 'gatekeepers' - determining who is legitimately 'sick' and requires referral to specialist services. Unfortunately, as generalists, GPs knowledge of 'niche' problems and treatments, especially those (like Propecia) not available on the NHS is often limited. Because drug advertising is prohibited in the UK (and I think in the rest of the EU) there are very few channels for information on non-NHS treatments to reach consumers. It sucks. :(

Yeah no wonder propecia sales sucked half the men that asked for it probably got refused by the doctors. I mean the embarassment just of bringing it up and asking only to get shot down is almost reason enough to just not do it. I dont know though we cant forget propecia is a pretty powerful drug and powerful means potentially dangerous as well no matter how many studies or biological models no one knows what this could do very long term.

There's no such thing as absolute certainty. But finasteride has a good safety record, and is getting pretty old now... it was invented nearly 20 years ago, and has been in clinical use since 1992.

It's true, alot of doctors are just....idiots or ignorant or both. All they're taught is how to prescribe meds.

I agree with you, bringing up the hair loss topic wasnt the easiest thing for me either.

Not all doctors are like this though, my doctor was cool and all but I did know more about hairloss than he did.

well, DHT tests are very complicated/expensive/hard to get. so that is actually reasonable.

Order fincar from inhousepharmacy just in case you don't get your prescription right away. then get proscar. Or get propecia if you want to pay Merck back.

Personally, I don't think you can be too hard on doctors who don't know much about hair loss. What bothers me is the fact that your doctor didn't really listen to your concerns and basically dismissed what you had to say. That actually scares me. I mean fair enough, a doctor might not know much about Propecia but he didn't even seem willing to educate himself on the subject. To dismiss what a patient has to say like that is poor practice.

I agree, get a new doctor.

I have been on Propecia for a lonnng time bro

He gave me the Rx's for Propecia after my DHT test which I had to pay myself. My DHT was way above the normal range, so he let me get on Propecia.
