Your hairline looks like mine! Frontal hair loss sucks. Tried everything, finasteride, dutasteride, minoxidil, spironolactone, lasercomb, nothing really worked so far.

Hope you'll do better!

small update
40 days on finasteride
no sides with sex drive and erectrion
but i've notice yesterday the my spearm is watery
wtf is that?... should i go to a doctor or something?

I would recommend that you should if that's happening. And not to scare you, but just FYI -- there is an article that was posted somewhere around here which showed how finasteride reduces sperm count in men that use it. Since we men produce a lot of sperm though, I'm not sure if the reduction would hurt chances of trying to make a baby if one wanted.

The watery sperm is from the finasteride but its normal, very common, and your sperm will return to normal as soon as you stop taking the finasteride. I had the same thinig. It is nothing to worry about at all. Its good you have no sides, but then only a small percentage of people actually do get them (even though on here you would think it ws higher). I definitely think you are on your way to keeping your hair for many years to come.

But what you gotta realise is that you may not see the results you re hoping for. Its likely that propecia will just slow your hairloss dramatically for the next 5-10 years, so rather than expecting you adolescent hairline back in a couple of months, what you can more realistically expect is that in 5 years you hair will have only deteriorated a small amount, rather than the large amount it would have had you not got on the finasteride.

I used finasteride for 7 years and many many times felt like giving up as i thought it wasn't working, my hair was still receding and thinning. Then I realise 7 years had passed and my hair was far far better than I thought i was going to be by this age. Its hard to see finasteride working for you in the moment, but on reflection of time passed its easier to see its benefits.

By the way, its considered safe to concieve a child while using finasteride also. I did and everything was fine.

And finally, please give yourself a decent chance and get on the recommended dose!

Your 5 month update appears to look better than the baseline to me.

You applying minoxidil all over or just on the hairline?

The response curve from finasteride is relatively flat once you reach 0.2mg or even lower I believe. According to hair counts 0.2mg is about 90% effective (not 80%) as 1mg.

Sounds like you're getting one side from the 0.25mg so you might be riding that window of side effects where 90% efficiency is keeping you from getting the others.

I'm doing a similar regimen myself by taking 0.25mg EOD instead.

If money wasn't a concern for you then you might as well stay (or go back) on the Saw Palmetto. It's an androgen receptor blocker and does not reduce DHT like finasteride does so they work differently. It's not as aggressive as finasteride though so probably not a deal breaker. I take it myself along with B-Sitosterol.

REMEMBER, it takes about one year before you can make a decent assessment of how this stuff is working for you. For some individuals it can take a little bit longer. Give it time and enjoy life.

thanks for the comments
as fairtax said i know that 0.25mg is 90% as 1mg so i'll keep on this dose for now...

pepole say here that saw palmetto is not effective when taken oral
only topical..

so i don't know what to do i drop it and i think it's a mistake... but afraid to play with hormones to much and combin both finasteride and saw palmetto togther...

any advice?

avi,

You're not playing with hormones with Saw Palmetto as you can construe that to be with finasteride.

Do some research on saw palmetto. The way it is supposed to stop hairloss is by binding to the androgen receptor in the follicle. This means that DHT cannot bind to the androgen receptor and do its damage to the follicle.

Hold your horses there. The first question from anyone should always be do you have any genetic family history of male pattern baldness? it is a genetic disease. If you have a strong history of it then you should have been on propecia since it came out there is nothing else to save you as of today. If you have little history then its a tougher choice, but still worth trying. Next I have read not to mix saw palmetto and propecia. Considering both have similar methods of action, and saw palmetto was not studied for reactions with finasteride it makes sense. Of course its your health do whatever you want. I would also take .25 mg considering how slow and minor your hairloss is. Propecia screws up your hormonal system we all know that. Your estrogen, aromatase conversion rate, testosterone are all going to go higher. Take the least you can.

I dont know who says saw palmetto is perfectly safe and does not mess anything up but they are full of crap. It messed me up it did exactly to me what finasteride supposedly can do, although not at the same order of magnitude id imagine. Saw palmetto does different things to different people. I thought id try the no harm done saw palmetto route myself and it does indeed do something to me. Made my dick numb and did oddly make my head less itchy and more numb. Its supposedly used as an aphrodisiac so this in theory shouldnt happen but it did.

No matter what anyone says you take the proven 3 or just experiment on yourself. Good luck.

abcd,

Do some research on Saw Palmetto. There is nothing more in this than there is in a sugar cube that can cause impotence.

Again, it does NOT inhibit the 5AR enzyme like finasteride contrary to what people still seem to think for some reason.

I've heard people claim even Beta-Sitosterol supplements have given them these symptoms. My guess is because it's related to Saw Palmetto. If that's the case than Olive Oil should also cause impotence as it's number one phytosterol is in fact BETA-SITOSTEROL.

Placebo effect can cause a lot of these "side effects" too. Apparently does if finasteride's sides were < 2% during clinical trials.
