New guy, 24 years old. Need some advice on my hair.

Hey guys,

A little bit about myself. I'm 24 years old and for the past 6 months or so (since March) I've been feeling like my hair has less weight than it used to, feels softer, less resistant when I run a brush through it, and seems to blow around more in the wind. I tried throwing Nizoral into my shower time 2 or 3 times a week in April and it made my hair feel frizzy, thin, and lifeless so I stopped. Since then, it feels like my hair doesn't have the same "bounce" that it used to and just lays flat on my head. Noticed some burning and itching AFTER using Nizoral, which is still present but not as bad. I don't see much of a change in my hairline, I think it's looked this way since I was at least 17. Granted, I still have A LOT of hair. I'm just seeking advice and opinions, so if something is going on I can catch it early.

Some family history: my uncle on my moms side went NW7 bald in his late 20s/early 30s, other maternal uncle had thinning hair throughout his life not sure of the extent of it. Maternal grandfather had a head of hair (probably NW2 or 3) until he got cancer and passed away from it. Dad has a full head of hair at 60 and so does his brother. Paternal grandfather had a head of hair (Norwood 2 or 3) til the day he died.

Been trying to remain calm and assess the situation with care. Saw a dermatologist in May. She sucked. Basically looked at my hair for all of 15 seconds and shrugged her shoulders and said "hmmm, I don't know."

I've taken some pictures over time, sorry the lighting and camera aren't totally consistent. I've tried to do a combo of wet/dry pictures with my hair combed back or tousled back with my fingers. Let me know what you guys see. Is this early diffuse thinning? Just the way my hair parts?

Looks to me like you have nothing to worry about. Your hairline seems exactly the same and maybe a bit of thinning going on but other than that it looks absolutely fine. Ofcourse I'm just a random guy on the internet telling you this.

Hahaha ouch shookwun.

Thanks for the look DeadLine.

I do hope no one here thinks I'm trolling or anything of that sort. Been wracking my brain about my hair for the past 6 months really, and lurking this forum endlessly before posting (took a while for my account to get activated). I really appreciate the feedback guys.

Bump. Anyone else have advice? Especially on that last picture

dunno. looks like you might have some light diffuse thinning across the scalp, but that's because you are under harshlight. Note that the best indicator is if you were to cut your hair rather short (think 1 or 2 guard) to see whether there is a drastic difference between the vertex vis a vis the back and sides. I personally don't think that you have much to worry about, but at this stage, even if you had some mild thinning, finasteride will in all likelihood reverse it in very short order.

you are in a very good spot. go to a derm if you need the peace of mind.

Thanks for the look man!

That's what I've been fearing a bit (somewhat obsessively, I'll admit) since my hair overall is feeling a bit thinner. Though I'm not in the position where I want to shave whole head down to a 1 or 2 I'll continue to keep an eye on it.

I saw one derm that was no help at all. Considering seeing another. I have a checkup with my GP on Friday so I'll chat with him a bit about it.

Thanks again for the insight rocklegends, really appreciate it!

Looks like diffuse thinning. If it's only your gene-dependent area is thinning...You know the diagnosis, sorry. To clear things up, the "original" diffuse unpatterned alopecia(DUPA) is very rare, this is probably typical diffuse male pattern baldness.

Thanks for the look Alex. Any reason you feel strong about that diagnosis, as opposed to some of the others that have commented? I saw you're a diffuse thinner. Did your hair look similar at the early stages? How's your treatment going?

Thanks for the look TD.

Shook, your sarcastic sharp humor is just like mine, but I could see plenty of dudes getting bent out of shape haha. I appreciate the look. As far as being a metro, well I definitely care about my looks and hair so, whatever, I'll roll with it. Just trying to see if something's up since my hair feels like it has less body than 6 months ago, and catch it early if there is, that's all.

Perfectly fine.
If your concerned of the state or future of your follicles nl go get a tricho test done where they can closely examine every mm of your scalp for miniturization

That's good advice. Thanks shook. Anybody here from the Philadelphia area by chance? If I do start looking for a better derm, here is probably a good place to start asking around.

See a hair transplant surgeon . They can do a full scalp analysis if I'm not mistaken. Anything else is just speculation.

honestly looks good to me, wish I had that kind of hair. You might be over paranoid about your hair when you don't have to be .
