I was at my GPs and she had a look through my scalp. She said I don't have alopecia and that my hair is just going through some resting phase, that happens blokes my age. This would explain my thinning.

Also I'm shedding less past few days and I've noticed small hairs growing the top of my head.

Hopefully she is right and my hair gets back to normal. Do you think she is talking **** though?

What food/supplements help your hair? And what is the best shampoo and conditioner to use?

talking sh*t?

who knows, but I will say that *my* GP was utterly, utterly useless (a woman, and completely unsympathetic). You're better off going to a dermatologist.

she's likely full of sh*t. how old are you? unless you had some incredibly stressful events that put your scalp into telogen, i think you have male pattern baldness bud. see a derm as the previous poster said.

Anybody know where I can find one? I live in Scotland and have looked at Yellow Pages and can find f' all on Dermatologists.

I'm 20. I had long hair with a stupid fringe and was constantly sweeping it back. This have something to do with it.

Ok, This is what you need to do is go to ANOTHER GP and ask for a referral to a Dermatologist.

You say your hair is thinning? is this at the crown, the front ?

What food/supplements help your hair? And what is the best shampoo and conditioner to use?

These are not going to stop or slow down hairloss on their own!

I am sorry but your GP is talking out of her arse!

Hey Forrt, a fellow Scot, eh? If you have long fringe then you're probably in a better state than me, man. My hair's longish too, but there just isn't enough at the front to have a proper fringe.

As others have said, you need to see a GP to get a referral to a derm. Next time I go back to my Doctor I'm going to ask for one. I sympathise with your Doctor problems. Mine's bald, and contrary to what you'd expect, he isn't at all sympathetic - in fact I think he's damn well jealous that I'm doing something about my hair loss and he didn't.

As for what to do? First, do you have male pattern baldness in your family? If you do, and you're losing hair, best to get on the meds. Propecia is pill which you take daily which will (well...should) slow down or stop your hair loss and also allow you to grow a bit back. Nizoral is a good shampoo that aids regrowth (I think) and fights dandruff etc.

If you're desperate for regrowth best to add Minoxidil to the above, but it's a pain in the arse to use.

No most people with fantastic long floppy hairstyles are always playing with their hair. As for seeking expert advice F**k it! There is no better source of info than this forum.

"She said I don't have alopecia..." HA!

Never trust a GP concerning your hair loss. They are only good for prescribing Propecia upon YOUR request.

Within two months I knew more about hair loss than my two preferred (woman) GPs. Inclusive, most male GPs also know fcuk all about hair loss, even the ones who are clearly losing it hand over fist.

Forums like this provided a great deal of education, simple, logical and highly factual information.

When I saw my gp the first time asking about hairloss, he told me there was nothing you could do about it. When I found this site, I saw him again asking about propecia and he knew about it already and would prescribe it to me....
