Nioxin vs. Rogain

I have been using Nioxin now for over eight years, whether it has done much good or not I can't really tell. I have certainly had hair growth but am not sure if those hairs fell out before they matured or not. I have been reseeding for at least eight years. Starting using Nioxin in college and haven't changed much. At this point the hair on the whole top of my head is pretty much gone and the I am seeing more and more scalp as time goes on. It's time for a change and I have heard many people having much success with Rogain. My concern is, of course, growing hair on other parts of my body that I don't want hair. And of course I am concerned that the product will cause a greater increase in hair loss during the beginning of the program. I plan to use both Nioxin and Rogain. Using Nioxin occasionally to clean out the scalp and applying Rogain in the morning and then again after I take a shower at night.

Does anyone have experience with using both products together or changing from one to the other?

Thanks!

Nioxin  Nioxin  Nioxin :freaked2: do a search on the forum. I would suggest to you to get on a proven treatment like finasteride and minoxidil and try adding some Nizoral to it.

While Nixon does contain some ingredients that may reduce scalp DHT levels, no studies have been conducted that prove Nioxin as valid hairloss treatment. Generally, most if not all users of Nixon do not experience any regrowth or slowing of their hairloss. The shampoo and conditioner do a nice job of cosmetically thickening your hair, but as far as treating hairloss, Nioxin is an overpriced ineffective treatment.

Nioxin reportedly contains one or two of the same fatty acids that Revivogen contains. My hair stylist swears by the fact that he has seen results in some of his clients using Nioxin. Even though he is the one who sells it, I think he's being somewhat honest. I'd still say Revivogen is better bang for the buck, if you're looking for a "potentially helpful" addition to your regimen.

Do you think it would be safe to use Nioxin as a shampoo and conditioner and then applying the Rogaine/Regaine? Or would I be better off using the Pregaine shampoo?

Nioxin indeed has not been a proven treatement for hairloss, and the company never promoted it as such, but some of their promotions are fine lining it.

What I want to avoid is a big shed and a scalp itch, I've used Nioxin for almost nine years and I'm afraid the hair I have left is going to fall out after I switch. Being as Nioxin does a pretty good job of cleaning the scalp and moisturizing it, it would seem to me it works a bit like Nizoral, preparing the scalp to recieve a hairloss treatment.

It doesn't matter...They're just shampoos and conditioners, nothing more.

That being said, I'm a big fan of Nioxin's Scalp Therapy conditioner. I use it pretty much daily. I really like the mint smell and that menthol feeling it has on the scalp.

yes I use 5% minoxidil but I don't use the Nioxin leave in topical. I just use their conditioner and occasionally their shampoo because I like the way it makes my hair feel.
I think you may be a little confused. Using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner is no different than using any other shampoo and conditioner (pantene for example).

BadHairDecade,

Nioxin shampoo and conditioner supposively cleans the scalp better than other shampoos, I think, and cleans out all the gunk that gets stuck in the scalp. Many salons have told me to stop using traditional shampoos as they leave a film and Nioxin will take out and clean out the pores better. Could be a misconception.

I have bought the pregain shampoo and may start using it and only using the Nioxin conditioner if my scalp is dry.

Are you having any luck using these two products together? I mean are you seeing a difference using the minoxidil? How long did it take?

Nioxin usage with minoxidil

I called Pfizer as I had some other questions for them, and while on the phone I asked them if I could use Nioxin with Rogaine. They looked through their books and said, "yes." They said the shampoo and conditioner from Nioxin was fine to use with Rogaine, except for Step 3, which would make absolute sense because Step 3 is the stuff that you leave in your hair like follicle booster and cytogen. I didn't ask, but I would imagine their styling products would also be okay to use as they are not products that assist with stimulating the scalp for hair growth.

Is Finasteride or Revivogen less greasy than Regaine/Rogaine? Or maybe some other brand like Kirkland or Dr. Lee. I used the Regaine for the first time last night and was astounded by the amount of oil in the product! :freaked2: Even after I woke up I could still see the residue in my hair and it feels and looks nasty! I can even still see the product on my scalp, although mostly dried if I run my fingers across my scalp I can feel the grease. I've even told my wife not to touch my hair as I am afraid if she gets this stuff on her hands and doesn't wash it off it may have some effect on her.

Finasteride is the drug in Propecia, so it's a pill. Revivogen is pretty greasy, greasier than Rogaine even.

mvp,

I realized that, my screw up. Thanks for pointing that out.

Which minoxidil brand is the least greasiest? I used the Regaine for a day and stopped, woke up and said, WTF, left my scalp and hair feeling and looking pretty nasty. I don't want to get this stuff all over my bed and all over my wife. After 12 hours it was as bad as when I first put it on, I used the recommended dosage as well, followed everything specifically. I don't like it. :? :-x :freaked: :? :? :? :?

People claim that Dr. Lee's 5% formula is not greasy. I haven't used it though.

Yeah, I read that also, and just sent them an email, but I am not living in the US right now so I'd pay quite a price to have it shipped overseas, but if it works it would be worth it.

NIOXIN

hey, i've been on nioxin for about 2 years. it's definitely pricy, but with it in rotation, i think my bottles go for about 1 year. my stylist swears by it and she knows i order the stuff online so she's not making a profit. i always make it a point to ask if there's anything she'd recommend and she always says NIoxin. She'll work on my hair every 4-6 weeks and she says she notices hair growing. Now, staying on th ehead is a different story. she says she sees a lot of new growth, but it doesn't seem to stay on. i've recently started finasteride and hopefully with lower levels of DHT being produced, things will change a bit. I have been keeping a diary and taking photos every couple of weeks and will definitely release it as soon as I get enough info / pictures to prove if things work one way or another. Here's my regiment:

Nioxin cleanser and conditioner
Nizoral
Suave Professional Shampoo (this stuff's great... super cheap - $2 / bottle)
0.83 mg of fincar / day (soon to be bumped up to 1.25 mg... cutting sucks to try to get 1mg)
Will start using minoxidil. 5% within the next couple weeks

Definitely will let you know how things go.

See the problem here is ALL hair dressers are dumb asses. I've been to three differnt ones in the last couple years (before treatments)....Each one of them says the same thing. You have a bunch of little hairs growing.....yes it's called the miniatureization process. Hiar falls out, then another grows in it's place only smaller. This happens until the follicle go's completely dormant.
Nioxin trains these people and what Nioxin tells them is the only hair loss information they know. Trust me on this one guys. Like I've said before great shampoo and conditioner but that's about it.

BHD, I'd have to agree with you, even though Nioxin's claim does not say it grows hairs it ceratinly alluedes to the fact, and personally I feel in some ways they are lying to the hair dressers.

I know there are other shampoo's out there that are recommended for hair loss, can anyone suggest some and tell us their experiences? I went to a dermatolgist a few days ago, the Doctor said I was in stage five of seven and recommended I start procecia or a generic brand. I know a good shampoo could also help. I could stick with the Nioxin, but frankly I am bit tired of their absolutely terrible customer service.
