Nizoral Shampoo Side Effects?

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone who has taken Nizoral shampoo (Or any shampoo with ketoconazole) has experienced side effects (similar to those experienced by some Finasteride users) from taking it. I know that it is an DHT blocker (in rough terms), and was wondering if it would possibly have similar side effects to what Finasteride is purported to cause.

My understanding is that this is not the case, since the shampoo is topical and only blocks the DHT in the scalp. Thanks in advance for any help.

Alright, then here is a better question. Does the ketoconazole in Nizoral work by blocking the androgen receptors in the scalp or does it seep into the skin somehow and interfere with the conversion of testosterone into DHT? Basically, does the shampoo work only topically or does it also have systemic effects on the body's hormones?

its a shampoo..... its effects are extremely small on hairloss as well as everything else.

The biggest "side effect" is drying out your hair

Extremely dried and thinned out my hair because I overused it (2-3x a week for 6 months) - Hair loss is a listed side effect but won't affect everyone I guess, but it hit me pretty hard

I can't stand threads like these which seem to be on the rise. I spent months if not years on hair loss forums doing my research by searching through old threads. I must have read every single thread in existence across every forum regarding use of Nizoral and other topics. If you come here and ask questions without inputting any research in yourself and expect other members to answer the same questions that have been beaten to death, it's really disrespectful. On the other forums that I'm on, this gets you a warning because it clutters up the threads and it's seen as disrespectful and lazy.

Don't take this personally OP. I've been noticing that this seems to be on rise and I just decided to address this on your thread. In response to your question, it's a resounding no. If anyone uses Ketoconazole shampoo and claims to have side effects similar to finasteride users then they are either lying or have a mental condition.

If it's effect is so small, then why is it part of the big three that I am hearing about? At any rate, it appears that ketoconazole administered topically works by preventing the binding of DHT to the receptors in the hair follicles, and does not work systemically.

Superteeth, I have experianced a hairloss side effect from using Nizoral shampoo. It is because of the shampoo 100%. My hair has always been very thick, I simply used it as a preventative maintenance. I did not over use as I have heard some do. I used it on every 3rd or 4th day. I used a small nickel to quarter size drop and left it in for the duration of the shower. I've used it for about 3 months and just a few weeks ago noticed that my entire scalp had thinned out about 30%. I can now see my scalp. This is very strange because I never had this problem until after using this shampoo and I am over 40. I can honestly tell you, I do not have male pattern baldness, but because of the shampoo, I have now thinned out. My warning to you, if you try this shampoo, be very careful to monitor your progress or regress. I have reported this to the company using the number from my Nizoral bottle. Goodluck!

I wouldn't rule it out. I started Nizoral 2x per week for a couple of months before starting Min + finasteride and my hair seemed to thin drastically. I stopped for a couple of months when I went on vacation and my hair seemed to get better. I brushed it off and started using it again 1x per week when I started Min + finasteride. I can't say whether Nizoral made my hair worse or it was simply coincidental but I'm still scared when I use it now.

I completely agree with you MoHairMoBetta. There are just to many of us that have experianced drastic hair loss/thinning from using it, for it not to be a cautionary regiman.

Not going to say it's impossibly because i don't know but you sure it didn't just make your hair drier and in doing so appear to be thinner? I used it for a month and it made my hair feel super dry/dead and it appeared to be thinner and I came to my own conclusion that nizoral probably wasn't going to help me that much with hairloss anyway so i stopped using it. Pretty much as soon as i started using a different and regular shampoo my hair looked a lot better.

I had a bad reaction to Nizoral after just a few uses. Nizoral is not for everyone. It is not just a shampoo----it contains a drug. Some people can have an allergy/reaction to the active ingredient, ketoconazole. In my case, it caused severe scalp inflammation, greasy scalp and hair, and it stripped the color right out of my hair--went from a dark brown to a lighter, reddish brown. On top of that I had the biggest shed of my life. Everything resolved itself after a couple of months but I would absolutely never go near that crap again.

when i first started nizoral it actually gave me the very thing it supposed to destroy - some kind of sebboreha,
i guess you should start really carefully with this shampoo and only leave it for 1-2 minutes at the first times, using no more than 3 times a week
i started 3 times a week but left it for 5-8 minutes and it gave me this stupid rash.

i guess it works a bit like vaccines work
a low dose of the 'trouble maker' so that the body will fight it,
but take a bigger dose and youre in trouble.

I posted a thread on Nizoral while back. Basically I went a bit crazy with it (daily use) and shed a huge amount of hair... even ended up with a "landing strip" thin patch down the top of my head where I was letting it sit for 10 minutes.

I wouldn't rush to neg the OP. Thinning with Nizoral is mentioned too frequently to make fun of it. So lets keep an open mind about it. When I noticed my hair loss the first thing I jumped on was nizoral. Either the balding process became much more aggressive immediately after I started using nizoral (that is in the period of using it for approx 3 weeks) or it's the shampoos fault.
