i had used nothing but nizoral for about 1 year.

i should probably not have quit finast, and recenlty purchased some that I hope is legit (qhi.co.uk).

i have noticed a general loss of hair, probably more so than when i was on finast. however, the nizoral kept my scalp feeling nice.

Nizoral is extremely unlikely to help you in fighting male pattern baldness if used alone.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere, Dr. Lee saying that with Nizoral alone, hair can be maintained when the male pattern baldness sufferer is in early stages for some time.

Ty,
I dont exactly remember where I read it. I think it was here only or HLH, in which a guy raised concern to Dr. Lee that he was too young(17) for Propecia and did not want to start Minoxidil either. In response to that Dr. Lee suggested using him using nizoral 2% alone which would maintain his hair for some time and later he can start finasteride/Min

Here is the Q/A

Ben asked: "good day Dr Lee Im a 25 year old male experiencing male pattern baldness Im about a norwood I recently began doing what has been termed scalp exercises. I know this sounds illogical to do this but Im desperate for any kind of help and Im worried about propecia systematic effects and damage it may do to my frontal hairline. But during these exercises there is an increase in blood flow to the scalp and as ive heard that this could be the reason these exercises are able to maintain hair count but If you increase bloodflow in anyway to th scalp would you be increasing dht exposure as well?..As Ive heard blood is the carrie f dht..please advise..thank you sincerly Ben"

Dr Richard Lee, MD answered: "Although an adequate oxygenated blood flow is necessary for any and all of the tissues of the body to function properly, not all disorders of the body are related to decreased blood flow. For example, a decreased blood flow in the scalp is not the cause or even a factor in the cause or causes of male pattern baldness. Consider this: when hair follicles are transplanted from the occiput to any of the areas affected by male pattern baldness, they will continue to produce full thickness hair shafts. If the native hair follicles in the recipient sites were compromised due to decreased blood flow in the area, the transplanted hair follicles would not be expected to produce mature, thick hair. But, they do, simply because they are genetically encoded to do so.

Vascularity (blood flow) to the scalp does not significantly change with age. All you need for proof is a simple cut in the skin anywhere in the scalp. Bleeding is always profuse.

You are not putting your hair follicles at greater risk for male pattern baldness by doing "scalp exercises". If it gives you comfort to do so, you should continue your exercise regime.

I can appreciate your concern in regards to the use of finasteride (or any other systemic medication) to lower the levels of DHT in the scalp, especially at your young age. Since you still have an enviable head of hair (Norwood 1) and wish to maintain it, I'd suggest simply shampooing every third day or so with a shampoo that contains ketoconazole. Ketoconazole has been proven to inhibit the synthesis of DHT and that's a treatment regimen for male pattern baldness that easy to comply with.

Richard Lee, M.D. "

ketocazlone or whatever has been proven to increase the diameter of the hairshaft, i have not heard it maintain hair count, or grow it for that matter.

In trials Nizoral has achieved both the following:

1. It has increased average hair diameter by 8%
2. It has increased the number of hairs in anagen by 6%

So, it increases both hair thickness and hair count.

Nizoral 2% has been found to be comparable to Minoxidil 2% in studies.

I am currently on nizoral, I use AC Revatalize Shampoo and Conditioner and take a Multivitamin pill daily and my hair has improved DRASTICALLY over the past month or so. I'm a diffuse thinner...since taking nizoral and AC, my hair is thicker, I am not losing any in the shower, pillow, etc...so there is some truth to this. I am certainly at the early stages of male pattern baldness but nizoral is some seriously strong stuff...

I have used nizoral shampoo and creme for 15 years, starting when I was 21, for Seb. Dermatitus and rosacea. I am now 36 and an NW2, heading to a NW3.

I only started losing my hair about two years ago. I believe it was the nizoral that held onto my hair over the years. I am now using Super Zix, Caffeine shampoo, and taking a great multi vite + Fish oil. I will soon add AA. Somewhere down the road I may add minoxidil, but when I tried it last year I shed like mad and haven't grown back what I lost, so I am a little gunshy.

I've been using Nizoral, only three times so far. I've noticed my hair looks significantly thicker, which is nice. So, the shampoo itself has a nice additional cosmetic effect.

At least 1 forum member has.

Back in the old alt.baldspot days - there was a thread that lasted for about a year entitled "Nizoral is god".

Seems at least this one guy grew all his hair back using nothing but.

I'd say it's rare - and the nizoral must've cleared up some scalp problems he was having which caused his hairloss.

For you and me and most everybody else though - it's probably best just to consider it another weapon in the arsenal.
