Norwood 2 Vs. High Hairline & Potential Of Male Pattern Baldness?

Hi All,

Appreciate I'm new to the forum, thanks for the help in advance.

I've always had a high hairline (tried to show in some of the photos below) but in recent times the U-shape of my hairline has become more prominent, to the point it is noticeable especially with short hair. In my view it's not gone backwards at the temples, but the width of the U has decreased. I think the general health of my hair is good (crown and top of head looks thick) and the hair in the U on the fringe is thick (no sign of it turning into an island as far as I can tell).

My housemate swears by finasteride but he has a family history of balding (his twin has receded noticeably further), but I am loathed to take it if my hair is unlikely to recede past this point. Just to add my family history is pretty good, dad still has a reasonable amount of hair on top at 60, both granddads also didn't go completely bald on top until later on in their lives.

Interested to get an opinion on where I am and if anyone has been in a similar situation as it really doesn't fit with the generic norwood system!

Cheers

So my question here - is there a realistic chance that it's 'maturing' and will hold for a number of years, or is it more likely to continue to disappear if i dont consider some meds?

Cheers for the response, have you been experiencing constant recession or does it seem to have slowed down? Have you done anything to combat it? (I think I'm slightly better off than you for the moment (not a boast, i may be kidding myself haha), but would like for it not to get any worse!

Yes you are better than me now no doubt! and yes i use rosemary oil mixed with other essential oils and nizoral and vitamins for 4 moths, but for now no signs of any regrowth, just no more thinning, i'm affraid finasteride is the only option for us if we want to regrowth our hairlines there's no other way,but i can't find it in my country at pharmacies and im still affraid of sides of this pill.
Maybe you can try also and Minoxidil but without finasteride is almost pointless.
btw your age ?

Its a bit far gone to be considered a mature hairline I'm afraid. It will continue to progress, in my opinion.

Ok cool, to be honest I haven't tried anything yet, i'm based in the UK can so order finasteride online, 25 btw. My main concern about finasteride is that i dont want to start on it if it's not required, the hair on my crown/ the fringe is still very thick and the hairline is consistent, even if quite high up. I've booked myself to see a dermatologist so will see what he says.

The thing that makes me unsure is how thick the remaining hair still is, 0 to limited thinning, but you've worried me enough to fork out and get a verdict from a dermatoligist ;) will let you know the professionals opinion

looks pretty solid to me. Some recession for sure but your overall hair characteristics look great and I can't see anywhere on the scalp where you are definitively thinning out other than the gradual recession at the hairline corners. Typically a good sign but yeah this is why male pattern baldness can suck even for people with a minimal dose of it, you don't know where or if the recession will stop. You could either get on finasteride right away or wait 6 months to a year to reevaluate. Many would argue that if you will go through life with recession occurring at a snails pace than getting on finasteride might not even do much or anything at all in the grand scheme of things. I have a similar hairline and ended up taking finasteride because it laid to the rest the constant stress thinking about the what-ifs.

Try to replicate the 2012 photo. Same lighting, same angle, same hair style. It's hard to see if you've gotten worse.

Solid NW2 and a decent looking hairline shape. I disagree that you've progressed past a mature hairline and the slow progression shown in your photos backs that up.

Apologies for being slow to get back to you guys, appreciate the input. Went to see a tricologist in London, seemed to know what he was talking about and his name showed up in a few newspaper articles about hair loss. Wasnt keen to get me on finasteride as hair was still strong, and no problem with crown. Suggested minoxidil (drops not mousse) but said it might only be a placebo as there is minimal thinning. Good news is he said even if it goes tits up theres plenty of hair elsewhere for a transplant ;) also can go back for free check ups so will update if it changes
