Obsidian's Story - (age 21) *** UPDATE***

Hi,

So for most of my life I have had thick hair and I wore my hair long and parted down the middle from age 12 to now (I am 21). I knew my Grandfather on my Mom's side started going bald around 15 or 16 and was bald by 19 or 20, my Uncle had the M shape hairline but it never went more than that. My Dad also has full head of hair along with his three brothers and his Dad, so I thought I was in the clear sonAlthough around 19 I noticed thinning in some areas. I finally cut my hair short and for good around April 3rd and I noticed since my hairline has receded some. Although my hair looks good in dark, it looks terrible in light. Is there any hope of me being able to slow down to the process?

hey and welcome to the boards. most everyone here will tell you to get on the "big 3"

1. finasteride (propecia) - 1 pill daily
2. rogaine (foam or liquid) - applied 1 or 2x daily
3. nizoral (anti-fungal shampoo to be used every few days)

At your current stage I'd suggest just getting on propecia alone for now and re-evaluate in 4-6 months. However, your hairloss doesn't look bad or advanced enough, so you might just keep an eye on it and wait on the finasteride.

I can still remember the first time I checked my crown out and was like damn! Of course I had noticed my temples going for some time but the crown is an area you just never see in the mirror. Its good you are catching it early!

The thing I am wondering about is since I got a haircut just over three weeks ago that I push forward since I parted my hair down the middle since I was 12 years old, is portion of that just my hair wanting to part? My question is, do you think I can still stay an Norwood-2? I have been eating right the past year (chicken, fish, vegetables, lots of water), exercising (running and weight-lifting 3 times a week), and taking vitamins.

are you asking if its due to the way you part your hair and not male pattern baldness?

could be. that's why i'd just keep an eye on it and see if it gets noticeably worse/starts to bald in a typical pattern.

for now it's hard to say. can you post some pics of the temples? (with hair pulled back of course)

I started documenting it around late January to early February of this year

Right after I cut it all off for locks of love

These two were are from Wednesday and Thursday

I would like to think the reason my hairline receded was because of wearing long hair for so long and putting it into ponytails but I know genetics played a hand in this.

while you are years away from it being even the slightest bit noticeable, i do think i see very subtle recession on the hairline, and combined with the very subtle thinning of the crown, it could be male pattern baldness. it could also just be the development of a "mature" hairline. my advice would be to keep an eye on it and see how rapidly it progresses over the next year. that said, i waited probably 2 years after i was sure my hairline was receding before i started finasteride and it has pretty much stopped any further shedding (though who knows what will happen in the future). wish i had started earlier.

by the way, not to be gay or anything, but i think it looks best with bangs, the one where you've got the yellow shirt on. cheers.

Your hair seems to be very fine in texture so it kind of seems like it thinning out but I think parting your hair in the middle has something to do with it. I started parting my hair down the middle about 12 years ago and it seems all my thinning is just straight down the middle only and of course some recession at the temples. I am of coarse alot older than you and I still have a full head of hair but my hair is fine like yours.

So I have forgot to tell everyone I have already been using Nizoral for a while (bad flakes like my Dad) and started taking Biotin pulls. I am still not for sure if this is just a mature hairline or advancing baldness. The reason I say this is here is a picture from when I was 17 before I decided to grow out my hair again.

So I started Nizoral, biotin, trying stress release techniques (already exercise 3 times a week) and got a better haircut since that was the first short haircut I had in a LONG time but I still don't see that much of an improvement. Granted ,it has only been two months and it is going to take a while for my hair to accept the combed forever look after having it parted down the middle for over a decade.

I see what your getting at, but you're too young to tell, your hair is changing but it may be from adolescent to mature, and if fact may get no worse. I hold off off on finasteride or minoxidil, maybe switch from 1 to 2% nizoral (if you haven't) 2-3 times a week and Revivogen or eqivalent 4-5 days a week. Good news for you is HM will be here in the next 10 years (thats right, i'm calling it), so relax and maintain. Re-evaluate 6 months.

Well I think I am panicking just a little too much, I know stress is probably a big cause in my hair loss starting early along with genetics. Yet I look at this picture at 19 and I realize I already have this hairline.

Age 19(2006):
(yes if you listen to metal some of you will recognize these people)

Age 21(2007-2008):

Most recent (late March of 2008)

(i'm the one next to guy with the 40 ounce)

I think all I can do now is just not worry about it and just keep eating right, exercising, and using nizoral. I think I am keeping my hair short anyway, it is nice to not have to put time into it and plus girls actually look at you like you're attractive (I do not know why I did not realize this earlier).

On the second photo is vocalist of Celtic Frost. I dont know why but he's hanging out with a hat. He had an extreme and gorgeous hair in the 80's.
