I've been concerned throughout my life as long as I could remember about hairloss on my crown and temples.
( Crown being more severe)

My first stop to reversing this process was getting on minoxidil. It ended with sad results as I had barely any patience keeping up with the strict 2 day routine w/ liquid mino. There was almost no gains by the end of the 4-5 month trial and infact i do believe it had made my crown worse after stopping.

The after some months of thinking i decided to jump on the finasteride boat.
And the no1 concern for finasteride is sides right? 0 till this very day. 0.

Results from fina?
- 0-3 months; less hairfall, not considerably but a bit less. Not sure if placebo eff.
- 4-9 months ; definately felt my hair becoming stronger and less fragile. Before fina I would run my hand through my head for a 100% chance at hairfall, now its around 25%.
-10- 1yr 2 monthish; slowly receding temples have actually filled up on the apex without my notice
- 1 yr 3 month - Present; My main concern area for hairloss was and still is on the crown. For over a year there was 0 sign of improvement, some days I felt as if my crown was emptier some days fuller, it all depended on my mood. But overall I could say 0 change. But around the 1 yr 3month mark I could see a sudden surge in smaller yet permanent hairs in the almost bare regions. It was unexpected surprise. Now these hairs ended up becoming longer and stronger, and I can visually see the improvements in my crown on a month-month basis.

TLDR; Finasteride takes only a few months for maintenance to kick in.
However REGROWTH from FINASTERIDE ALONE will take at least 1+ to 2 years as the scalp requires the new DHT levels to settle in and adapt.
Wispy hairs from finasteride indicate transition from maintenance to regrowth. They most likely wont grow anymore/fall out. However, strong black hairs will root up without you expecting it later down the line!

Thanks for the update! I am in a similar situation in that my crown and mid-scalp region has a very small density while my hairline is still going strong. My hair by nature is a bit thick so I am able to cover it by combing. I used Finasteride religiously for a few months before stopping for a whole due to gyno sides. Thankfully they have gone away and I have started taking the tablets again a month ago. I hope my results turn out similar to yours. I am actually in the process of growing my hair but I am afraid it will look like crap with a thinning crown, what do you think?

Sounds good mate, did you experience any additional shedding before you noticed less hair fall? I've read that finasteride can cause extra shedding before it begins to work, but not in every case.
