Hey all,

I was just wondering if anyone has any opinions on the effectiveness of 0.5mg propecia? I'm sure this has been asked before but i cant find any info on it really. Any comments are appreciated.

Cheers,
Banjo

i started off on .5mg (for 6 months) and since January i have been on a full tablet, my GF said that my hair did thicken up on .5mg but i did not feel the same so i jumped on a full tablet,,
my thoughts are if 1mg is the tested dose for optimum results then thats the dose i require.....

but with regards to side effects, i have none on both doses so dont worry
may be try half dose then jump to a full dose after

regards

its about 80% the effectiveness of 1mg, and side effects r about 80% the severity of 1 mg.

Im new to propecia and ive been taking it it for a little over a month. I took 1mg for a few days but I decided to take 0.5mg daily to save more money. If what anxious1 says is true than Id say that is a good trade off for just taking half and saving money.

But my question is, has anyone here had good success by taking 0.5mg daily?

I just hope im not wasting time and money. :shakehead:

It's really best to stick to the 1MG dosage. Some people claim that less than 1MG reduces side effects, but i've yet to see any evidence of this other than peoples claims. If you experience sides on a 1MG dose, you will almost certainly experience them on any other dose. They might not come on as fast or quite as severely, but you are still going to have them.

If you are doing this in an interest to save money, I would recommend .25MG twice a day. Someone a while ago posted the math on this, but this dosage keeps the 'flat dose response' above effective levels if you take it twice a day. Again, there is only anecdotal evidence of this, but it seems likely to be the case.

There's many scientific charts flying around drawn from research that show a lower dosage is still effective, but at a percentage of how effective 1mg is (the official dosage). The effect caps out above 1mg where even 5mg has a very minimal improvement. 0.5mg was something like 80% as effective or something since it blocks less DHT, and 0.25 is about 50% or 60%.

Money wise, not a horrible idea if you want to split it. Make sure to keep it away from preggers and kiddies. Healthwise...it's purely anectedotal but I've seen a few people post how .5mg and .25mg worked perfectly fine for them, and they claim it decreased the side effects, and I've also read about doctors who prescribe in those doses, so yea, take that for what it's worth, no official research on side effects at different doses has ever been done so it's all conjecture.

Myself, I've been at 1mg for 3 years, had good regrowth and no side effects *that I know of*, but just to see, I'm taking it down to .25mg for a few months to see if it still maintains.

Cheers.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the .25mg twice a day tip. I will consider taking it like that. Ill try to get my Doctor to prescribe me the 5mg finasteride. I mean its cheaper and you get more doses out of it right? That is some win/win situation.

Yeah I just seen a image of the chart by merck. Quite surprised by the data actually.

I have a question regarding the shed. On the first week I took 1mg I experienced reduced shedding in the shower. However, I started shedding more than usual on the second week which is when I started to lower my dose to 0.5mg and started applying minoxidil.

Do you think that it could be because of the fact that I lowered my dosage of propecia? Or could it be from the minoxidil?

I also read that you can experience shedding from propecia as well and it is a sign of the medication working so I am trying not to put too much thought into it.

ps:best of luck on maintaining on a lower dose. Will be looking forward to an update.

Both minoxidil and propecia can/will cause increased shedding for maybe weeks or months before the hair starts regrowing or maintaining itself (if you're a responder), I use both as well and went through that phase starting off.

If you're only in your first few weeks and you're taking both, then yes, don't be surprised. I would say it's more the minoxidil causing it at such an early stage. I personally don't think lowering your Propecia dosage would have that dramatic an effect, especially so early on. From what I gathered from papers, the drug can stay in your system anywhere from half a day to 48 hours, and the effect that the drug has on DHT can linger up to two weeks, barring statiscally rare exceptions.

My unscientific suggestion is to stick with 0.5mg daily for a few months to see if you get any sides or results, the rogaine twice a day, and throw some nizoral into the mix every 2 or 3 days as your shampoo (the big 3). Just have patience and see where it gets you. Also, Toppik or some other form of concealer works well during the shedding phase, if the shedding bothers you.

Disclaimer that I'm not a doctor, just saying what seemed to work adequately for me, and general forum advice. Good luck. :punk:
