Oral Minoxidil Caused Telogen Effluvium

I switched to 2.5 twice a day oral minoxidil from like .45 or so a day like a month or so ago, and the shedding has been horrendous. It’s all over my scalp making me think it’s telogen effluvium. Should I reduce the oral minoxidil I’m taking or just stick with it and the telogen effluvium eventually go away?

It's probably not Telogen Effluvium. Oral minoxidil will sync your anagen all over your body, not just on your scalp.

Stick to it, the harder you shed, the bigger the potential for regrowth.

Shedding is just the rapid fall of telogen hairs. Although it does seem as if it’s a lot of hair, it’s what you would have lost nonetheless but it’s shedding faster.

So I just hit the 2 year mark on Oral Minoxidil. The initial shed was by far one of the most awful experiences of my life.

I started at 2.5. I have never stopped shedding. Added topical Finasteride a year later and still no slow down. I know there was some regrowth or I’d be a diffuse NW9 at that pace. I’m too terrified to stop but there’s no way anything can keep up with the shedding. I mean angel tears couldn’t recover the 200 plus long hairs that drop each day.

Shed also hits the back and sides.

So proceed with caution. Definitely an easier option than twice a day, no sides and perfect cardio check up every year.

Question, would stopping now be a death sentence or might I slow the shed and hold onto some of my longer hair with the Finasteride in place?

But for some people it’s not like that and it never stops

Man I hope so because before the shedding it wasn’t super obvious I was losing my hair but now it’s so bad that i can’t even hide it anymore.

Don’t worry about it. It will stop after around six weeks of use. I stopped shedding after two months.

When did the hair start growing back? And was the hairline affected a lot? I used topical on my hairline for a really long time. Like over a year and then switched to the oral.so maybe that’s why it’s fucked my hairline. But hopefully those hairs grow back

I don’t use minoxidil. I had an initial shed due to a rapid hormonal shift, and because of dutasteride. It was shedding all over, and it shed the most where the hair is more dense (sides and back). It didn’t effect my hairline, I started growing new hairs on my hairline. I started noticing new sprouts of hair at around the two month mark.

Do you have any images of your hair?

If I am being completely honest, I don’t think dutasteride or oral minoxidil will help much when it comes to your hairline. Your hair definitely appears to be thicker at the crown and front nowadays (I’m not sure if that’s just due to the lighting though).

My hairline was fine until the oral minoxidil shed

That’s quite weird... I don’t think your hairline will come back in all honesty, unless you used stronger medications.
I mean how much stronger is there and also here is some now photos but I tried to get better lighting. I am also dermarolling the hairline once a day and I’ve been doing that for only a little bit. Some days I had forgot

I went through a horrible shed when i first started oral minoxidil, then i went through a similar shed about 7 months in, currently no shedding. I'd just say stick with it and ride it out and pray for the best.

I mean you were just saying oh yeah it will all grow back. Doesn’t make a lot of sense for it to shed the whole top of my head and my hairline massively and then say well the hairline won’t come back. I mean they’re shedded hairs from the oral minoxidil

Agreed. I started late and the advice from dermatologists etc. on shed regrowth were bullshit. I would have never touched Minoxidil before low dosing Finasteride. Really screwed myself, I really don’t think any recover justifies the shed.
