yep, i'm around that age as well. You should be ok. I think if these signs of 'lightening' don't show up till mid to late 20s then you will never be bald enough compared to people your own age for it to be a setback.

You just need to make the jump from:

"oh sh*t, I'm losing some hair"

to

"everyone loses their hair, i'm not losing it fast enough for it to affect my life, compared to some people who are not as lucky".

This is a bigger mental jump for some than for others.

problem is I am losing it fast!!!!!! i could have hair glue in my hair, have it shorter than it is now and take a pic and you wouldnt see scalp at all 5 months ago.

It really troubles me. and I do understand that a lot of people lose hair.. and i do understand that people that younger than me lost hair. but it still sucks no matter what. it's really hard for me to deal with.

as far as i can see propecia hasnt helped AT ALL!!!!!
i went from looking 21 to 31 in 3 months!!

Part of it is psychological. I know some people lose it slower and faster than others, but most likely you will be ok hair-wise for years to come with the amount you have now and that's with NO treatments. Mid-30s things would start looking ugly.

But, being on finasteride, you should be in even better shape.

You're too close to be able to look at yourself objectively. I was in a similar position a year ago. It will all start looking better soon. You know why? Because 6 months from now you will look at pictures and realize you look pretty much the same. Then 6 months later, same thing. At that point you'll realize how slow things really DO move.

Good Luck.

Don't give up on the Propecia. You've haven't been taking it long enough. I was pretty much at the thinning stage you are at (very early stage) when I started on the drug and it took a year to really get the sense that it was working and almost two years for the effects to peak (I've been on it for seven years). My hair maintained perfectly for another four years after that. Seriously, give it more time. You're just getting started. You're nipping the problem in the bud early and that's super important to get the maximum effects for finasteride. Stay on and by this time next year, I'd be surprised if you weren't 100% recovered. Stay the course!

I'd even go so far as to say ease off those topicals. At your very early stage of thinning, finasteride should be extremely effective. Problem is, you will attribute gains you make to your entire regimen when it's really the finasteride doing its thing.

I know where your head is at right now- You want to do everything possible to hold on to your hair and you think it's worth it to throw everything on your head, even if it's redundant. That's normal.

Before I started finasteride, I did minoxidil for a little over a year. It did nothing but cause frustration, irritation and make my hair look and feel like sh*t. All topicals are sketchy as hell at this point. So you don't want to end up making all these gains due to finasteride and keep spending time and money on topicals when they're probably doing not very much or nothing at all.

To drive the point home, my Derm doesn't even prescribe minoxidil anymore (5% is not OTC in Canada). He says minoxidil creates too many frustrated patients. He literally laughs when I ask about other topicals. Also, if you'll notice, there are very few posters on this board who've been on finasteride for more than two years. I'm assuming that's because they've conquered their problems and don't need to come here. I know I stopped frequenting male pattern baldness sites after I started recovering.

I'm back now because in my seventh year on finasteride, male pattern baldness has suddenly resumed. Sucks, but I did gain around five extra years with perfect hair.

So yeah, I'd really consider dropping those topicals and sticking with the finasteride. It worked GREAT for me.

Jeffsss, lot of your "hair loss" (And I do lose the term loosely) is exagerrated by that gel you are using. I mean, look at the part you are creating with that stuff.

that's no part!!!!

this is how i like styling my hair.. only problem is that since it's gotten so thin it just falls to one side..

i guess you could call it a part.. but is completley unintentional.

I think i am going to dump the topicals.. I'll use whatver is left of my tricomin.. but the rogaine has to go. it irritates my scalp anyway.

should i stick with nizoral / t-gel or should i just go back to my pantene pro-v thickening shampoo and conditioner.

This question is for Adrian1....did you shed and regrow and if so when and how much?

Did you experience the infamous 7-10 month shed? I did and my hair looks like absolute and utter sh*t compared to the last summer where I could get by without a concealer...impossible now due to the huge amount of shed and thinning. The shedding stopped, stabilized almost totally but I have little faith in regrowth so I started on minoxidil now in hope of some return to the days of glory.

Same thing here. Had a massive 9-month shed...
at 10.5 mos, my hair hadn't gotten that much better - Went on minoxidil... Yup, it works.

Is it because it's thinner that it falls to one side? Because mine always falls to the left when I do up the top, it's completely uncontrollable, it automatically wants to fall that way, starting from the very right side of my head.

Thanks Aplunk1, that's what I needed to hear. I'll stick with the minoxidil for now. How long did it take before the minoxidil kicked and you got some cosmetically noticable results? Any growth on the hairline. I lost A LOT of hair from all the male pattern baldness regions, even in ones I didn't have before treatment are now very obviously thinned like the vertex.

I can't recall exactly what happened shedding-wise. I know I didn't think it was working for a long time as i continued to shed and thin out. Then, after over a year of sticking to it... MAGIC! Stay the course.
