Permanent hyperandrogenism after stopping Finasteride

If your trying dutasteride just come back in like a year and see if its better. Its pointless posting every few days or weeks. male pattern baldness is measured in like 6 month or year intervals. Its a very very slow thing you cant even think about it until enough time passes. One month results are meaningless.

I don't post updates every few days or weeks (unless you're referring to my caustic wit and hilarious banter in the other sections). I only update my situation if someone asks me. And I know how long dutasteride takes to work for hair, but thats because of hair cycles, it should technically work quicker for inflammation. Either way I'll stay on it unless I get intolerable sides.

Dench,

I'm reading up on long-term fasting and there are claims it helps for everything from allergies, to depression, to arthritis (testimonial in GQ), to erectile dysfunction.

It'd be worth trying. You'd have to get it medically supervised, I think the international natural hygienic society is an umbrella organization for those doctors, but I'm not sure, I'm still reading up on it.

Hey Agustin, I've exhausted every possible hairloss treatment including CRTH2 antagonists and topical AAs, and even the most powerful anti-inflammatory meds (topical, or orals like indomethacin and prednisone) aren't much help. I'm currently on dutasteride+RU. Probably the only person dumb enough to try dutasteride after getting Androgenetic Alopecia inflammation from finasteride but I'm out of ideas and hoping maybe I'll respond to it differently. Its been nearly 2 months now, hasn't improved but also hasn't got any better, so I'll give it more time. I think I remember reading an old post of yours where I think it took about 1 month for dutasteride to reduce your inflammation? Or was it pretty instant?

Two months is way too short to come to any conclusions, so definitely do give treatment more time.

Yes Dench57, when I first started Dutasteride, a bit after one month, I started having a little less inflammation but it was still heavily present. It wasn't until three months well into the treatment where inflammation started to reduce drastically, and as well as shedding. Treatments really do take a while to start working adequately, they truly do. I'm over one year on Dutasteride and I'm still getting improvement, so nothing is instant when treating Male Pattern Baldness, obviously. I first started RU58841 in May 2015 and has been helpful, and hopefully it will in your case. I however value Dutasteride much more since it actually kills DHT and especially that the hormone of itself is an inflammatory compound.

To be realistic, do not expect inflammation and itching to subside by 100%, I still have them but are extremely minimal compared to how it was before. Getting on Dutasteride + RU58841 is as potent as it can get with what we have available, so hopefully you'll get a huge relief from your male pattern baldness with that combo. You'd have to be phenomenally unlucky if they don't do anything for you.

May treatment work for you! :salut:

scary stuff man. surely you'd think the body rectifies itself after a while (months, years), i can't imagine this small hormonal thing permanently changes something!

It's crazy, my sex drive has been through the f*****g roof lately, way more than I ever had pre-finasteride. I literally can't do anything but have sex, surf and chat to ladies on hookup apps or watch p**rn and masturabate right now and I'm three weeks from my final ever set of university exams before graduation. At least it is working for my hair.

Pretty much, although still hoping for a little extra density from the 6-12 month period. Actually want to lower the temple areas now, the hairline they did was good but I want more aggressive now considering how well the first run through went.

F#ck... Sorry to hear that! I'm in a crossroads myself! Been using minoxidil and fina for more than 6 months now and it's been horrible!
Went from having just a slight recession in the temples and some hairs miniaturizing in the hairline to having a freaking see through hairline in 6 months.. The amount of density I lost, man..... And now I dont konw if its minoxidil that is causing it or up regulation from finasteride...
I do have an itchy scalp and something that appears to be dry skin that can peel of! Also, some hairs taper big time towards the root!! Dont really know what to do! Quit minoxidil? Quit finasteride? Quit both? Give it more time? I do have an appointment with a hair specialist, but i still have to wait a full month and at this rate it wont really matter because my hairline will be gone by then...

Hey guys, I quit 3 Propecia 3 months ago after developing side-effects that have still not subsided. Here's my story:

I've always had thick hair but noticed slight temple receding in November so I got on .5mg of Propecia. I've never had any diffuse thinning or scalp problems such as itching, flaking, dandruff or oiliness. Within a month of taking Propecia I noticed a slight burning, itchy, tingly sensation along my frontal hairline. My hair became oily if I didn't wash it twice a day, my skin became oily and my sex drive went through the roof. I looked online and it became obvious I was having a "hyper-androgenic" reaction to finasteride:

"When the effects of androgens in the body are lessened, e.g. through lowering DHT or by blockading hormone receptors systemically, the body seeks equilibrium through a process called upregulation. This can take the form of increased hormone production and/or increased tissue sensitivity to the remaining hormones."
It's generally accepted that Finasteride can cause "intense upregulation" of androgen receptors. I will be happy to corroborate this if anyone wants me to - there's information about it all over the net. What I cannot find is any information regarding how long this "upregulated" state continues after stopping finasteride...or if it's permanent. There was NO physical signs of inflammation on my scalp, no flakiness, no dandruff. Just the itchy tingle and increased oil production. Anyway this was obviously unbearable so after 2 months on .5mg Propecia I came off the drug, expecting my body to return to normal within a few weeks. Well 3 months later and it's still as bad as ever. The frontal area where my scalp itches and tingles is quite tender and has thinned considerably. My temple recessing has accelerated markedly since this scalp stuff started. The itching/tingly/burning sensation is incredibly strong and 24 hours a day and is hugely stressful.

I've tried every type of medicated and anti-inflammatory shampoo, coal tar, keto etc. As I mentioned there is no redness or visible inflammation so I'm convinced the root cause is an internal/hormonal problem. I'm currently using Fluridil and topical spironolactone in a desperate bid to block the androgen receptors in my scalp, but neither seems to work. My doctor doesn't know what the problem is. I've been referred to a dermatologist but as I'm in the UK the NHS waiting list is months. I'm considering going private and spending hundreds of pounds to see a specialist endocrinologist but I fear even they won't be able to help me.

MY QUESTION IS: Has anyone else experienced this before? Does anyone know how long this "upregulated" state would continue after stopping finasteride, if it's permanent? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

- - - Updated - - -

To give you a measure of how desperate I am I am considering taking internal anti-androgens like spironolactone or Flutamide which pretty much guarantee god awful side effects such as ED and gyno. But I've realised that if my body had THIS extreme upregulation to something comparatively weak like Finasteride's 5ar inhibition, the upregulation I'll experience from hardcore internal anti-androgens will be ten times worse.

I understand what's happening to me is extremely rare and Propecia works for most people, but I still can't believe this drug for hair-loss treatment has the possibility to permanently accelerate male pattern baldness due to increased AR sensitivity.

We miss you @Dench57, you were one of the sharpest people here.

I hope that you're doing well.
