hi,

i am wondering what is the likelyhood of having permanent scalp tissue and/or follicle damage?

i'm 29 now and i noticed my thinning at age 26 a few years ago.

i am basing this question upon the fact that over the past 2 years of being on treatments for my diffuse thinning (mostly crown), that i experienced MANY MONTHS worth of severe itching and tender spots on my scalp.

at one point in 2004 i was dying my hair a lot, but i stopped doing that once i noticed thinning.

i got onto finasteride right away and have been on it ever since, then i added things like folligen and other treatments like Nizoral.. it took me forever to get the bad scalp health under control.

i've been on foam for a few months now and i have no irritation problems with it. before the foam i was using generic and brand name minoxidil.. with ppg.. and the ppg felt like it was killing my scalp, ALWAYS itchy .. for many months i dealt with the discomfort and soreness, and itchy flakey scalp.

i have it all under control now, my scalp health is wonderful... but i'm not sure if i am experiencing regrowth with the big 3.. i'm not even sure i'm holding on to what i have.

i've been VERY patient, and i'm still keeping consistant.. but i wonder if there was any permanent follicle damage done by the scratching and itching.. i mean i wasn't OCD style itching or tearing my scalp up i don't think, nothing disgusting.. just many many months worth of bad scalp health and stinging when i applied PPG based minoxidil products.

i keep my hair shaved 1/8th of an inch and i would love to grow my hair back but the diffuse thinning IS noticable, i'm not sure i would look good with hair anymore, which sucks.

i don't have any 'slick spots' of balding, but the thinning is really noticable towards the back of my head/crown.. it's diffuse and there is no real shape or pattern to it.

i'm nervous that i killed off follicles and that they are beyond repair.

is this a reasonable feeling to have?

i never took pictures either, i'm so nervous to even see my hair anymore.

my friend said recently "damn mike you're getting a bald spot".. i answered "genetics".. and he giggled.. i had to make light of the situation since it is definately noticable.

i hope i'm a responder but i really don't know anymore.. i've been on my treatments since around 2004 and it's like, when can i expect some really NICE results?

i figure permanet follicle damage is being paranoid BECAUSE there is still coverage everywhere, it's just VERY thin up top. my hairline is pretty nice still though.

i'm still continuing my treatments, i'm not going to give up..

any comments please?!
thanks so much,
-mike

i'm too nervous to show my crown, it's too thin.. though my mom and sister tell me i still have 'good coverage'..

i guess the coverage would mean that i still have follicles that are not 'dead' ??

otherwise, if there was damage to the tissue wouldn't that mean NO hair is growing from that area??

male pattern baldness is on non scarring alopecia group. You dont loose hair follicles on non scarring diseases.
