Prescription for Propecia...hesitant to pull the trigger.

23 years old, losing hair pretty rapidly. I used to be able to grow a bushy afro in highschool and for the last year it seems my hands are covered with hair after a shower and hasn't stopped since. Trying to not let the hair loss get to me, but it is. New girlfriend and I'm pretty confident that she has already noticed it and within a few months it will be very noticeable. Not sure how she'll react.

Anyways, was prescribed minoxidil a few months ago, but never really started taking it because the whole "shedding" thing freaked me out and hearing about how if it didn't work you were just left with way less hair than before. I still have a decent amount of hair but the temples are becoming more and more receded and thinning throughout. But went back to the doctor and he gave me prescription for finasteride.

After doing some research online, I'm pretty nervous about starting it. The whole "permanent ED" and **** has made me worried that if I start it and I get side effects that they will be permanent. My libido isn't very strong as it is, so worried about knocking it out completely.

Should I start on finasteride? Or should I really give minoxidil + nizoral a shot and see if that works at all first. Been hearing that minoxidil/nizoral on their own don't do **** so thought it was pointless to start either one.

Hey man, My only advice if your going to give it a crack. Take it with a clear head. I took it at 22 and I had horrible side effects, but don't let my experience tarnish yours. Just know that Finasteride does effect your male sex hormones so expect you could get sexual side effects. Theres guys that get no issues at all i have several friends, but just make sure you consult your doctor and just read the sides etc.

Only way to know is try. That's what I'm about to do. Take a really low dose like .25mg or .50mg.

Placebo groups consistently get the same amount of permanent sides as finasteride groups in studies.... meaning those who get permanent "sides" are not from the finasteride, just from natural aging/other causes.

Your statement on minoxidil leaving people worse than before is false, minoxidil will never hurt your hair in the long run. There is temporary shedding at the start for some, but that is all it is, temporary, followed by all that hair growing back.

You don't have to start with a low dose like the guy above me said. There will be little-no difference in sides by starting at a lower dose.

Only 2% of finasteride users get sides

I strongly recommend starting finasteride if you care about your hair, you can always stop if u get sides and everything will return to normal in 2 or 3 weeks

Sides are rare and statistically speaking completely reversible. However, if you worry too much, you will start imagining things. Especially when it comes to sexual performance. Don't be scared of minoxidil.. Those stories you mention are mostly anecdotal.
