As said in previous posts, I've been on Finasteride for 5 years now and have been relatively happy with it's results.

I've been reading various posts on a number of hair loss forums and have noted success stories with other products other than Finasteride. This intrigued me, as a number of products of which I didn't even know existed. What is minoxidil foam? Where do I access it? Is there a generic version? Also what is dutasteride? I'm assuming thats a abbreviation? And where do I access it? Is there also a generic copy?

Thanks guys for info and enlightening me on other products.

Minoxidil foam is, as the name suggests, a foam version of the popular topical hair stimulant. It has the advantage of being less greasy, non drip and easier to apply. I think it's hard to get hold of in the UK but I've seen it on Ebay.

dutasteride (dutasteride) is a DHT blocker drug similar to finasteride. Developed by GlaxoSmithKline, it's sold as Avodart and there are also various generic versions available. dutasteride was licensed for BPH (prostate enlargement) a couple of years ago and it was expected to be licensed for male pattern baldness as well. However, GSK cancelled its hair loss trials after a promising performance at FDA phase 2, probably for commercial reasons - the drug is very similar to Propecia, so it would be hard to find a profitable niche in the market.

dutasteride blocks both of the enzymes (5AR1 and 5AR2) that turn testosterone into DHT. Finasteride only blocks 5AR2. However, 5AR2 is thought to be the key cause of damage to hair follicles, not 5AR1. dutasteride also has an advantage here, because it blocks 5AR2 up to 98.5% compared to 90% with finasteride.

dutasteride is a much stronger drug than finasteride, with a much longer half-life (i.e., the time it takes to clear your body). If you experience sides from Propecia, you will experience them more strongly with dutasteride.

Only in theory, there are users who claim to have less and different sides on dutasteride than on finasteride.

That doesn't seem to make much sense intellectually though does it? How could you experience fewer sides from a stronger DHT inhibition?

Maybe the sides come from the drug and not the DHT inhibition? I definately recommend dutasteride over finasteride, i'm sharper on it I feel.

In another thread Bryan posted:
Both the desired effects and the side-effects come directly from the suppression of DHT.

TBH I'm not sure what people are getting from Internet pharmacies. Some folks are probably just buying repackaged Anadin! LOL
