There have been big improvements in the strength and reliability of the adhesives, even over the last 5 years. Plastic based hairpieces ("Thinskin") also seem to have improved a lot, although I don't personally use them. But the two big improvements which have made all the difference are price and information. Fine lace hairpieces have been available since the 1930s, but they were individual works of hand craftsmanship for an elite few who could afford them - mostly Hollywood actors. Now you can buy the same thing on the Web from a Chinese sweatshop for $200. The very biggest improvement has been the Internet. Previously mens' hairpieces were a deadly secret that dare not speak its name. Consequently wearers were at the mercy of shark outfits like Hair Club. Now you can preserve your anonymity but still find out everything you need to know to get a first class result from a hair system by reading forums like this and looking on YouTube, and you can do it for a price that the average Joe can afford.
