propecia alternative

I'm looking to get off Propecia since i don't want to take a prescription drug like it forever. I'm considering either Revivogen or Dr. Lee's Xandrox as an alternative DHT inhibitor. I use Minoxidil now, though it feels like crap and mats my hair down. Would appreciate advice on this. I was told that Lee's 5% minoxidil. is not as greasy and won't leave hair feeling brittle. However, I'm most concerned about adding a DHT inhib. since I'm going off Propecia. By the way, I had slight male breast enlargement from Propecia. Not cool.

try some saw palmetto.. it's a natural supplement.

you need a dht blocker in your regimine.. plain and simple.

How long have you been on finasteride? What were your results?

I suggest Revivogen + spironolactone 5% + Nizoral 2% combo.
Please ignore the post about Saw Palmetto. Even if this did manage to stop your hairloss (very VERY unlikely) you would still have the situation of having lowered systematic DHT levels in your body just like you do with taking finasteride.

there are alot of natural treatments..saw palmetto even have side effects but rarely compare with propcia...i think u must search a combination capsul..saw palmetto, beta sitesterol, soy isof,fo-ti,nettle,fatty acids, gingko, grapeseed, green tea etc etc..but these treatments can t work for everyone..and u can't hope for a miracle

Keep in mind that only prescription drugs like Propecia, Proscar, and Avodart are going to significantly lower your DHT.

Contrary to popular myth, Saw Palmetto does NOT lower your blood DHT. It won't help whatsoever. It will keep your prostrate healthy though ;)

I have no idea how effective the topical inhibitors are, but it seems likely they're meant to supplement, not replace, the prescription drugs.

From what I have read and seen if you are worried about inhibiting DHT you should probably jump on Flax Lignans SDG and get about 100mg a day. Remember SDG is key, if it does not say that on the bottle then it probably contains to little amount to be effective.

What is SDG? Would ground flax seeds do the trick?

Here is the basic study on Flax and how it works. I cannot locate the full study but a lot of the information is provided at the website mogadon sited.

Inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase in genital skin fibroblasts and prostate tissue by dietary lignans and isoflavonoids.

Evans BA, Griffiths K, Morton MS.

Department of Child Health, University of Wales College of Medicine, Health Park, Cardiff, UK.

Isoflavonoids and lignans, constituents of many plant foods, have been proposed as protective agents in those populations with a low incidence of hormone-dependent cancers. They may act by their inhibition of the metabolism of growth-promoting steroid hormones. This report describes the inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase and 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase by six isoflavonoids and two lignans in human genital skin fibroblast monolayers and homogenates, and in benign prostatic hyperplasia tissue homogenates. In genital skin fibroblasts, genistein, biochanin A and equol were the most potent inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase activity, each resulting in greater than 80% inhibition at a concentration of 100 microM. The IC50 values for genistein and a seven-compound mixture were approximately 35 microM and 20 microM (2.9 microM of each compound) respectively. Of the lignans, enterolactone was the most potent inhibitor. Inhibition by biochanin A was shown to be reversible. When genital skin fibroblast homogenates were used, biochanin A was found to inhibit 5 alpha-reductase isozymes 1 and 2 to differing extents (30% and 75% respectively). Genistein was shown to inhibit 5 alpha-reductase 2 in a non-competitive nature (Vmax and Km values without and with inhibitor were 30 and 20 pmol/mg protein per h and 177 and 170 nM respectively). All of the compounds tested inhibited 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in genital skin fibroblast monolayers. When prostate tissue homogenates were used, the compounds tested were better inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase 1 than 2.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Is there proof of this? (SP not lowering blood dht)

ok, so what if SP would lowers blood DHT?
Finasteride at 0.04mg a day lowers blood dht by a whopping 54%!
Finasteride at 0.2mg a day lowers blood dht by 62%
Finasteride at 1.0 a day lowers blood dht by 68%

still there is proof that there is a much better increase in haircount at 1.0mg finasteride than at 0.2mg.

i'm sure blood DHT plays only a small part in the whole male pattern baldness-process.

"This mechanism is confirmed by the observation that saw palmetto extract does not induce changes in the level of testosterone or other hormones in the plasma itself."

I should mention that I've never found clinical eveidence regarding SP's effect on DHT in scalp/hair tissue. For all I know, it may work there to help reduce balding. But we just don't know. It seems to really love sticking to prostate tissue though for some reason. Whether it sticks to other tissue... well, let me know if you find out ;)

dude even if it did lower dht then you'd just be in the same boat side effect wise as propecia, just with less potential for good hair. just because its 'natural' doesnt mean it wont give you side effects.

do freshy ground flax seeds have this SDG that you talk of?

Sublime, with all the things in your regimine, why not adding Saw Palmetto for good luck? I see you have just about everything else in there, including Propecia. Any results yet?
