I agree. Testosterone does damage hair we know this. If androgens damage hair then we need a treatment that essentially lowers or removes all androgens not just select ones like DHT just because its the most powerful.

Then again maybe its just that fragile hairline follicles are just more sensetive to DHT than the crown or midscalp hair?

Either way we need to know. I think the hairline is more critical to man's look than the crown or mid scalp.

If this were true than topical antiandrogens would be far more effective. But then again, do we HAVE any good topical antiandrogens? :shakehead:

If there is an unknown inhibitory effect in the very front and we know estrogen and testosterone can change hair growth cycles then Bryan how can you say for sure rising testosterone, or estrogen is not involved in any way in causing a mature hairline?

I'm saying that it doesn't make any sense to claim that a slight increase in testosterone could overwhelm a sharp decrease in DHT. And estrogen stimulates the growth of balding frontal scalp hair.

For all we know the rise in testosterone alone is enough to cause the frontal hair to miniaturize.

How could it do that when it's more than balanced by an even greater change (decrease) in DHT?

I started taking Propecia and then noticed that my hairline was receding, especially at my temples. My temples were also sore on and off for a couple of months. Now i'm on Month 6 and my temples look really bad, every time I get a haircut(3-4 weeks) I notice that it gets worse and worse. My twin brother then started taking Propecia about a month ago and he came to me yesterday and told me that he thought his temples were receding pretty bad because of the Propecia. The funny thing is that I never told him anything about my receding hairline and that I thought it was because of the Propecia, I thought it was all in my head until he came to me with the same results.

Now i'm thinking of using rogain foam on my temples or revivogen. But I don't know which one to pick.

Bryan, do you think cutting the dosage of Propecia to 0.5mg could have any influence on your success versus 1mg. And do you agree with Rassman that half the dose could be about 30% less effective than 1mg. And that slight reduction could make a significant difference?

I've been really worried that propecia has an adverse affect on the hairline for some time. I started using it a few years ago and my hair seemed to thin. I then stopped and my hair seemed to regain thickness,. although I am not sure how much this depended on my hair style and my "minds eye".

I started using propecia again this January after a hair cut. My hairline was fully in tact at the beginning of the year and I receded just a little. Now 6 months on my hair has thinned and i recede to the point where the hair at the front of my head is being isolated in the dreaded "island" pattern.

I am aware that there is an initial shed with propecia, but no one has explained to me whether or not this much loss could be accredited to that, and whether or not the shedded hair will grow back. Either way, if this isn't the shed then propecia has seriously accelerated my hairloss.

the key is to combine propecia with minoxidil foam on the hairline. i noticed my hairline continuing to recede for the first 2 months i started propecia. once i added foam i had an initial shed at 3 weeks, which came back, and i haven't lost another millimeter since - applying generously, 1 app per day to the hairline only.
