Propecia really messing up my hairline.

I'm a bit worried about the effect that propecia is having on my hairline. Since I began using the drug, the first few inches of hair behind the side of my hairline (which already receded to about two inches behind my natural hairline) has become incredibly thin, to the point that if I shave, it is not visible. This has occurred in the past three months and coincides with my taking of propecia. I know propcia is intended for diffuse thinning and I am worried that people who lose hair in a receding style from the front to the back may have the situation exacerbated by propecia. I am aware that while DHT levels decrease, testosterone levels increase, and I was thinking that this may increase the speed of hairline recession and the eventual frontal "island" pattern.

Really what I am asking is shall I quit? I was hoping I could maintain until folicle cloning became a reality, but its looking unlikely now.

propecia doesn't work for everyone.

BUT, it's really difficult to tell what will happen with you from this point on.

If you're not getting any sides, then it may be wise to continue.

Are you using anything else, like nizoral or minoxidil?

I'm just using propecia. Can't really afford minoxidil as well. I use head and shoulders menthol shampoo, as that really keeps my scalp clear (i've had terrible scalp psoriasis is the past). I have also been using a hair dryer for the past few months. Could this maybe affect things?

It has nothing to do with the hairdryer. You maybe shedding because there comes new growth and are pushing your old damaged hairs to fall, or either you get Telogen Effluvium from finasteride or your male pattern baldness is much stronger than the treatment. How long are you on finasteride?

Are you taking merck's propecia pills? You can get a prescription for proscar instead and save a lot of money (your insurance maybe covering it too) and earn some to spent on minoxidil that way. Generic minoxidil is really cheap.

I'm in a similar boat been on propecia for 2 months now but i got on it to try an undue do the damage i'd done on regaine, however i feel things just keep getting worse i've tried posting my issues on here but no-one helps, I've been pulling out terminal and vellus hair i give a little tug at my weakened hairline and 4-5 hairs come out! each time very scary, however if this is a shed then i suppose its working. But i would really like to know whether or not its good for hair on the hair lien/corners norwood2 progressin to 3 because its just exaberating the process or thats how it feels, i have a square inch of little sh*ty blond fragile hairs where 6 months ago there was an actual hair line

^^ yes my forehead has become way more oily for some reason. and when i wipe it off.. it reappears within like 20-30 minutes.

what does this mean? ive noticed it just recently.. over the past month or so.. and ive been on proscar for about 2 months.

Propecia is not going to hurt your hairline, if anything its going to help it. If you were off meds you would be a lot worse off believe me :shock:

So with the initial shed, will lost hair grow back? It seems paradoxical to me that propecia first makes you lose lots of hair, and then just might maintain what you are left with afterwards.

I really do think that inhibiting dht production is in turn causing my free testosterone levels to rise, because im sure my chest is becoming hairier.

If I were to stop using propecia, would everything return to normal??

Yeah that is a possibility. Inhibiting DHT does cause free testosterone to rise and I read a study recently that claims not only does DHT minaturize hair follicles but to a lessor small extent so does testosterone and the follicles at the front of the hairline ie: the temples, are most at risk.

I still think taking it is the lessor of two evils tho.


My hairline is just freaking gone lately, im so depressed about it, I practically think about it every minute of the day. Im looking into hair transplant's at the moment but the more i read about the more depressed I get because i just dont think im a good candidate at least based on what people on the boards say.

I just got my hair cut today and theres nothing left. Seriously. And when I got my haircut in january I had a fringe and everything.

I'm actually terrified of the next couple of months. Am I going to have lost it all??? What is propecia doing to me???

I'm so annoyed because I've just met this girl and there is no way I'm going to keep her if I lost all my hair by autumn.

Shall I stick with propecia or stop guys????

can you post some before and after pics for us to evaluate?

i'd say stay on propecia - i don't think its worsening your hairline, probably just the natural progression. i shed on propecia but only in the crown area.
