Proper Way To See If Your Hairline Is Receding

I feel like it looks like it's not receding sometimes and it looks like it's receding other times when I pull my hair up. What's the proper way to put your hair up to check your hairline (where to pull from, how hard to pull, at what angle, etc...)

You basically want to pull back your hair with decent force (don't need to be super aggressive, though) and take a picture of it from an aerial view. This means you should basically take a picture of the top of your head.

Yeah, that works.

You look like a typical Norwood 2. If there's no crown thinning, I would just monitor your hair every 3 months. Take pictures of your hairline (like that), the top of your head, and the crown. Take them both wet and dry, as well as in good and consistent lighting and picture quality.

You sure it's NW2? In all the other threads I made I got mostly either less than or equal to NW1 (I have a widows peak btw)

Yes, it's a NW2. Your temples have clearly receded, even for someone who was born with a Windows Peak NW0 hairline. Doesn't necessarily mean you'll continue to bald. That's why I'm suggesting for you to just monitor it.

I'm slightly skeptical. This seems a little too low to be NW2

@alekgn you're wrong this time buddy. this guy is clearly nw1 or less.

No offense but if this guy is norwood 2 theres no way you're nw1.5 considering his hair being more straight than yours. just stating the facts.

Norwaad 1.5 detected

As your Norwaadviser I recommend that you dip your entire head in cream of chram and pull your hair back with the force of a thousand suns and then take another pic to have a halal chance of coming close to Norwaad II

Upon reading a few of the other comments here, a NW1.5 might be a slightly more accurate assessment. My advice still holds.

I would also like to suggest Norwood classification is not a hard science. Some people don't even fall neatly into any one single Norwood category. I've seen people with Norwood 4 (and not Norwood 4A) frontal hairlines with no crown thinning. A Norwood 4 is technically supposed to have a thinning crown. While it's fairly obvious a Norwood 0 and a Norwood 3 look nothing alike, sometimes Norwood 1s with true widows peaks can look like Norwood 2s. It's not cut-and-dry.

A Norwood 1.5 may be a slightly more accurate classification. I wouldn't say a NW1 or less though. This is what I would consider a NW1 with a widow's peak:

The hairline, although has that v-shaped piece in the forelock, still looks more or less straight, rather than going diagnoally backwards, which would indicate minor temple recession. Some may consider the above a NW0.

I classify myself as a NW1.5 because my temples have shown some very minor recession, but the temple points are still strongly intact and the bald temple patches are fairly small. If the bald temple patches were bigger and my temple points were gone, then I'd consider myself a NW2. I wouldn't necessarily say the Norwood-Hamilton scale for assessing hair loss is completely cut-and-dry. What some may consider a Norwood 1.5 others might consider a NW2. Not everyone interprets the scale exactly the same way, as one can note if they've been through many threads on this forum. In any case, hair loss, no matter how small it is, is not exactly a competition. I'm sure there are Norwood 2s, maybe even Norwood 3s, who have lower hairlines/forelocks than I do. So be it. We're all just trying to keep our hair (and maybe regrow some) here, rather than competing for the least bald medal on the forum. I'm just a normal guy doing my best to give advice that I think is helpful. The OP can decide what to do (or not to do) with that advice. Ultimately, I wish the best for the OP, his hair, and his mental health. His hair still looks great.

@Alphalete I also hope your hair is doing well too. Just out of curiousy, how well has finasteride been working for you?
