Proscar Stopped Working?

Reaction score

I started taking proscar about a year ago. Started on a very small dosage then gradually built up to 1mg per day. After about 6 months or so it seemed to start working - I noticed little or no hair being lost in the shower. However after a while (about 3 months) I seemed to start losing hair again. Istopped using proscar for a short period - about 2 weeks and have started again, but I'm still losing a lot of hair.

Anyone any thoughts on why this might be? Would proscar really work for just a short period of time and then stop? Is it possible that it hasn't worked at all yet and the few months where I seemed to stop losing hair was just a coincidental slight pause in my hair loss?

it's highly likely that you're going through another shedding (second or third ??). When on hair loss treatments, you will have more than one shedding.

losing hair in the shower/ on your comb / on your pillow etc. is NOT a sign of male pattern baldness. male pattern baldness doesn't work like that.

if you haven't had any side effects then just keep taking the pill, get on with your life and don't keep thinking about it. That's the best advice IMO.

Seems to be a HELL of a lot of shedding all of a sudden! And seems to be going from my scalp area whereas that wasn't happening before

I've had sides - few funny things downstairs and a bit of pain but nothing bad really. Haven't noticed any for a while

If that's not how it works then how does it work? I seemed to stop losing hair in the shower for a few months after using proscar fora while, then early summer it started again and hasn't stopped. Is it possible that proscar only work for a matter of months? That seems strange!?

Any advice would be welcome. I'm thinking of starting on rogaine as well as carrying on with proscar. By the way, what's the difference c (if any)between proscar ITL and proscar!?

Any help appreciated!

it is not about how many hair you are losing in the shower etc (although it can be a good indication of an early sign of male pattern baldness). its all about your hair growth cycle, balance between anagen and telogene phase. You lose more hair than you grow, then you are in big trouble.
As far as I know, Proscar ITL is European Merck Proscar? so they are the same. cheers

Thanks for the explanation mate. Just seems weird that for a while I seemed to lose no hair when running my hands through my head and now I seem to be losing loads? I might stick with proscar for a little while for now then (I'm also using Nizoral 2%). I've read that it can take over a year for it to start to work for people so maybe it will be the same with me. I'd hate to throw the towel in with proscar 13 months or so when maybe when it was just about to start working. And I supposed I've only been on 1mg per day since Jan, which might have had an effect (was on 1/2mg per day before that)
