I bought some protein about 4 months ago read something convincing on here that it increased testosterone and stopped drinking it. What are peoples views on protein shakes, creatine, and compound exercises? From what I understand they increase testosterone and therefore hairloss. I don't completely understand the link between testosterone and hairloss so if someone could provide a resource i can look at or give some advice on the subject it would be good.

I also have a LOT of body hair and have ever since I was 15 I wonder if this has a link to hight testosterone levels or DHT?

I've seen people talking about Telogen Effluvium I don't know what this is but from my understanding it can be caused by finasteride Increasing testosterone so it would be good if someone could clear that up for me too.

My fear is that I have extremely hight testosterone levels and that's the root of my hairloss rather than DHT and finasteride isn't going to fight lower.

I know there's alot of questions and lack of knowledge here but I'd appreciate any knowledgeable input.

Many thanks

People on body building forums are going to say it has no effect. People trying to make money out of selling some special mix that's better for your hairloss are going to say it does. Also the effects on Insulin levels after a shake could have an effect.

I think any anabolic exersice, protien shake and creatine will increase testosterone. The question is how much and does the protien shake make up for the increase in testosterone by providing protien to aid hair growth.

Also how much of an effect does testosterone have on hairloss compared to DHT and does this "ratio" vary much in people.

I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to this, these are only my opinions which i have based upon what I've seen on this forum. So it could all be complete bull****. If someone could provide legit unbiased evidence that shows a correlation between protein shakes and testosterone and how paramount testosterone is in hairloss in comparison to DHT I think we'd have a better insight.

Actually some in bodybuilding forums WILL say it does have some effect. It's explained away in the links though..

Taking workout supplements will not increase testosterone unless you are taking substances that are purposely formulated to do so. i.e. Tribulus terrestris... Heavy lifting and the act of actually working out will increase testosterone naturally but not above natural levels.. I occasionally cycle anabolic steroids so I do know how test effects male pattern baldness...

I've been in the gym for twenty years. I took Hot Stuff, Whey, Protein shakes for fifteen of those twenty years. I never took steroids and I strongly feel that the protein shakes contributed to my hair loss. The reason why is that some of the products that came out ( such as Hot Stuff ) were almost the equivalent of taking steroids and what they did for me was make me stronger and thicker and really helped me gain. The negative to that is for everything good there is a side effect and for me it was my hair. The heavy working out with the protein shakes raised testosterone levels which increased DHT levels which exacerbated hair loss that was coming any way. I can tell you though had I been on The Big Three twelve years ago though I feel I would have 15% more hair today. I just didn't have anything in my system at the time to block the DHT which is what killed a lot of my crown region follicles.

Mark - have you had sides from propecia? Has it made you feel worse in the gym at all?

No Gh. No sides although I know some people have. I strongly feel that because I run the treadmill three times a week and have been doing so since I have been on Propecia is the reason why I haven't had any problems. I also drink about four times a week so all of the sediment that comes with putting a drug such as Propecia in your system as well as the vehicle that Minoxidil uses ( PPG ) and all of the bad stuff ( beer ) doesn't stay in my system long. When I don't drink beer, I drink a lot of water and it flushes my system out. This sounds bizarre but I'm telling you it's the only way a drug like propecia is going to be effective and not cause problems. I had been dragging the past three months ( I'm 45 now ) however I got back on Multi-Vitamins this past weekend after being off of them for the past three months and that was all that I needed.

i am really curious about this.

i take a simple whey protien daily after the gym. never thought it could be harmfull. how is a protein shake any different from eating 2 protien filled chicken breasts?

Ryder,

I think you'll be fine. I personally feel that if you take protein powder or a shake within a normal consumption routine, then it will feed your muscle and help you build mass. For me though, I was taking that stuff religiously like one high protein shake every day with peanut butter, eggs, banana, milk, etc... The stuff that I was taking had other kinds of stuff in it as well ( flavor of the month ) as far as back then it was Hot Stuff, then Creatine and today they're all taking Jack 3D.
I was getting stronger and about 10 lbs thicker and I have a high metabolism, which means that the stuff was doing something to my body. I believe it drove up my natural testosterone levels. Because of this, since I wasn't on The Big three at the time I feel that it took away in other areas including my hair. As long as you're taking something to inhibit the DHT and you keep the protein shakes in moderation which it sounds like you're doing, you'll be fine.

that's what i figured.

i just don;t understand how the 'protien' in whey isolate is different then the protein in meats? ie if protien shakes increase balding, wouldn't a protien diet do the same?

i'm just having one of those months where i started to train again, and i think i noticed a tad more hair loss in my problem areas.. maybe its just a placebo effect.

i'm only losing hair in the temple areas and just can't seem to get a handle on it

Whey protein shakes are derived from dairy - some people say dairy can contribute to hair loss because it contains so many hormones. Milk is taken from pregnant cows which are full of hormones - further to that they are given artificial hormones to allow them to produce more milk...some of this is supposedly (I'm just quoting what i have read) very similar to human DHT.

I don't know - but I do know that my temples receded/matured at age 24-25 when i was exercising heavily and taking protein shakes every day. I now use protein shakes maximum 2-3 times a week and try to get my protein from fish - mackerel, tuna etc...just in case there is truth to the claims.

Ah hah. Yes Gh that actually makes sense. I was doing the exact same thing at 24-25 and had the same problems. You just made me realize that I had completely cut milk out of my diet over the past few years. I only drink a little half and half with my coffee in the morning. The main reason I cut it out was because it was giving me a fat face and a double chin. However, after reading what you're saying here I'm starting to think that the milk as well as the high protein shakes exacerbated the hair loss.
