According to a very senior hair transplant surgeon.

FFS. Just when I feel a bit better about myself because i'm back doing weights, drinking the protein shakes and i see this.

My hair did start thinning a few years ago when i took weight training more seriously...coincidence?

Damn.

Protein Shakes? man, you need to worry about your liver not your hair.

Quit drinking that crap, it will mess with your health really bad.

I'm an athlete...i don't drink alcohol but i need the protein for recovery after workouts. I'd say i treat my body fairly well.

that it supposedly contributes to hair loss is just another kick in the teeth.

I don't understand really how Whey Protein could promote balding lol, weight training on the other hand can make sense since you are temporarily elevating T levels right? Which means more DHT right? Sorry, I've never been too into the theory of balding but I assume that is right, however I also assume unless you are lifting 6 days a week intensely and taking juice aswell it will not have any sort of significant impact on your hair loss..

How much do they (thats if they indeed do) speed up balding that is the question?

All these guys who are following ridiculously strict diets ect is it really going to make a worthwhile difference to the average NW5/6/7.

Like I've said before if you have the genetics for it just living is bad for your hair. Some guys are destined to go bald no matter what diet/lifestyle they follow.
Whilst we all see NW1's who totally abuse their health with no hairloss repurcussions.

saf...i used to agree with you but now I'm thinking that is too simplistic. In the last few months iv pretty much become obsessed with this stuff (not really what i wanted!) and have read all these top dermatologists and hair transplant doctors talk about how lifestyle can play a part. How? The truth is that nobody really knows - but it does seem to be the case going on what these guys see coming through their doors every day. Until recently I never knew anything about 'gene expression' - basically you can have a gene for something but it won't be 'triggered' as quickly/in some cases maybe not at all? without certain factors. In the case of male pattern baldness you could say that a guy with higher levels of DHT than his father might bald five to ten years earlier even though he has the same balding genes, or maybe it could be due to other factors. I always thought that stress was not connected with male pattern baldness but since then I've read Dr Rassman talk about how it is part of the puzzle and how it seems stress can trigger things to start earlier. Smoking is another known factor...

I just think that there is more to it than 'if you have the gene you will go bald' - yeah i agree that you probably will - but to what extent and how quickly may be determined by other factors.

*Goes to sip some green tea in the desperate hope that less hairs will fall tonight!!!*

"Loosing hair" is just a process where the new hair after a shed will grow a little thinner, the more you shed, the worst your hair will look.

If you have a really bad life (bad diet, addictions, stress, etc...) your hair will shed much more faster, speeding up the balding process.

So, in the end you will be bald no matter what, the question is.... when?

Check out the galleries of all past Mr. Olympia

Only one of them has been *slightly* bald

Yes, they do weight training, consume ridiculous amounts of protein, and shoot enough testosterone to kill a man. They still kept their hair

In that case then they're irrelevant to the discussion anyway because they didn't have the balding genetics. We're talking about the effects of lifting and protein shakes in people who do have the genetics to go bald.

Maybe the Mr olympia competitiors were subconsciously scored better if they had hair too? Or perhaps it's just a coincidence.

No were not, because we get soooo many guys who come on here and actually believe that diet/lifestyle is the cause of their hairloss and think that adjusting it is going to be a cure.
This is exactly what I've always said :
If you have the genetics, simply living is going to cause you to go bald. And you can try changeing diet/lifestyle but you cant alter your genetic destiny. Not by any amount that would make it worthwhile. The NW5/6/7's of this world are not going to be able to save themselves or hold back the tide by trying to live a carb free existance.
