question about clippers

So I've pretty much given up on treating my hair loss -- most of the treatments I've tried are either too much of a pain in the ***, ineffective, or give me sides.

So I'm trying to build up my confidence to just buzz my head. My question, then, is about hair clippers -- how much should I spend on a pair? I've seen different kinds for all different prices, and I'm just wondering if it's worth paying the extra buck for a supposedly "better" pair.

I've never buzzed my hair, so this is a big deal for me. I'm thinning AND receding, so I'm not sure how good it'll look. But to tell you guys the truth, I'm just sick of seeing and worrying about my thinning hair. One gust of wind and things look disastrous -- at least with a shaved head, I'll know how I look ALL the time.

Sorry about the extra stuff -- just wanted to get some stuff off my chest. But if anyone knows about clippers, let me know.

Cheers!

if you're going to be doing it regularly, then you owe it to yourself to get yourself a quality pair of clippers made by a manufacturer like Oster or Wahl that make replacement blades for when you need to replace them down the line. But a good quality clipper like made by these two companies should last you at least a few years if not longer, like a decade. I know guys with high quality razors like these who have owned theirs for more than a decade and they're still going.

Here's a good one:

I think it may be the top of the line human hair clipper that Oster makes:

I know it's expensive but I don't think you'll regret purchasing it. Use a shopper search engine like Froogle or Nextag if you wanna find the cheapest price on it.

Thanks Jayman -- appreciate the advice. And what do you think is best for a thinning/receding guy, down to 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch? And this might seem really stupid, but I should use scissors first to cut things down before I start buzzing it, right?

Man oh man, it's going to be whole new me....

generally the shorter the cut the lesser the contrast between full/balding areas. longer hairs create more contrast between balding areas and fuller areas because they showcase both.

i would snap the half inch guard on first and see how you like it. you can always go shorter and snap the quarter inch guard on, and then the eighth of an inch one if you still aren't satisfied. if you still wanna get closer without having to use a razor and shaving cream, just take the guard off the clippers and run it all over your head. should leave your hair about 1 millimeter long.

as for scissors, no need man. just use the clippers to take the whole thing down but go slow so you dont pull on your long hair.

if you wanna see what half inch buzz and eighth of an inch buzzes look like, respectively, check out these two pics of me with my hair cut to those lengths all over my head:

Thanks man, for all the pointers. Hopefully I'll get it done on Sunday when I've got some spare time. I'm nervous of what it'll look like, but I've got to at least try it once!

Cheers!

I agree with Jayman. When its time for me to throw in the towel I will for sure buy a top of the line set. No need to skimp out.

Best of luck to you and you made a good choice.

When the fight is over. You may be in OK shape but others are NW3 and beyond and not responding. Kinda dumb answer.

Well at some point your male pattern baldness will surpass modern treatments, as they stand right now anyway.

hair transplant surgery is simply awful in my opinion. I think they look awful and who wants touch up surgeries every 5 to 10 years? Thats one thing people rarely think about. Ever seen someone who had an hair transplant and then they thin out lower and lower on the sides of their head? They look horrible.

dumb excuse me...cassin has been on finasteride since 04 and he claims he has not lost ANY grown since then....seems like a good sign to me..and if he did start to lose some grown in the near future...he could try other treatments like dutasteride....or prox-n

whats so DUMB about that?

Never dutasteride, no way. Won't ever happen.

I share the same views as Mike, 20 years is a long time! But still at some point its going to catch up to you. I figure I have at least another 10 years of hair left with my current regimen. Finasteride, Minoxidil and Copper Peptides.

With the treatments we have right now I don't see myself using much else. Perhaps Dr Proctors products, maybe try Dr Lees 15%, but thats it.

Honestly, at some point you will accept your fate. Believe me. I would never say that a few years ago but recently I have learned to accept it. If my treatments started failing tomorrow I think I would be just fine and just go by the best pair of clippers possible.

I know its a total cliche and people are sick of hearing it on hair loss forums but if you take care of yourself and have a tan that is simply dark enough to make you not look like a corpse you won't look that bad.

so you have what another 10 years you estimate...thats a LONG time man...you sound as if your reading to buzs your head now...by the way you wrote your post...

Why the big fear with dutasteride? dont want to inhibit 5ar1?

dutasteride just seems far too powerful and I am simple not comfortable with it. Sides last too long and studies and articles I have read (not stuff on forums) make me wary. Its not worth the risk to me. Risk reward is to off balance considering what finasteride does. Is dutasteride better than finasteride? Yes. But is it that much better to risk the sides? Absolutely not in my opinion.

And I am ready to buzz it if need be. I'd rather pop a pill and slop some foam in my hair everyday..... but if its time so be it.

Clipper Maintance

Most any of the clippers out there will give you your money's worth when you put the cost of same up against the cost of getting it buzzed in a shop.

Keep the clipper blades clean (with a brush) and keep the blades lubed with a light oil (normaly included with the clipper set) and you will get YEARS of use. That is if you don't drop them and chip the blades.

I have clippers that are in use daily and have been so for years.
