Question: Why do mammals have hair?

Answer: To keep body heat in

Question: Why would mammals loose hair?

Answer: To allow body heat to escape

Question: Where do humans loose 1/3 of their body heat?

Answer: Out of the top of their head

This doesn't explain why only men loose their hair, if i was to jump at a theory i'd say that it's more important for the female of the species to retain body heat as they bear children for 9 months so they probably don't want to expel heat (energy).

Opinions?

interesting theory.
but if we lose hair for body heat to escape, shouldn't all men be bald or balding?

maybe they will.

Or maybe those who don't will die out through natural selection because their head becomes so hot it explodes in flames.

Perhaps the hairloss trait is somehow physiologically tied to some other trait that is genetically desirable.. like, a big c***? Or maybe enhanced virility?

I'm thinking more on the lines of increased intelligence. A big CPU needs a big heatsink :(

The most probable assumption to why we loose hair does not derive from some sort of advantaje, but a mutation that occured, and does not harm any one possesses--> bald men still f***.

nobody really knows, but male pattern baldness is common in most of the "great apes" including humans

it most likely started as a mutation and through whatever means, was more selective as the balding males may have been viewed as more "powerful" or preferred by our ancestors

As far as I'm concerned Head Hair was essential in neanderthal and homo sapiens times, to protect the head from sun and cold weather. Because scalp skin is one of the most sensible skin areas of our body.

Ahahaha powersam. I think he means "sensitive"

In German "sensibel" means "sensitive" and it's a common mistake German people make when speaking english. Though it could be the same in other languages, so he may not be german.

Many things have no goal. As you see, bald and non bald people can live ,
So balding is just the cause of a mutation....

My theory is that we started losing hair because the skin can synthesise vitamin D from sunlight better. Back in the days where roots and nuts were the best you were going to get, this was a pretty good evolutionary advantage. Could be wrong tho.

That sounds like a good theory.

Can not give an opinion on that because it’s almost really hard to know why our genes evolved to male pattern baldness in some men...did

By the way gorillas have male pattern baldness too

yeah, we did, and thats why people in northern hemisphere have light skin to allow more sunlight for Vit D, but what does that have to do with male pattern baldness?
