Hello,
I have a few questions.

1) I had a surgical procedure by a now defunct group called Elliot Thomas back in 1993. The results are fair - but not steller. I must now look towards my second procedure - that I have been putting off due to my last experience. Are the results of FUT and related technology really going to be better then the mini punch grafts of 14 years ago. The healing/scaring was horrible - and it took about 6 months for the recipient sites to look good enough to not need a comb over. Your input is appreciated.

2) If I have a second procedure with FUT - will they be able to place the recipient hair in a way to not destroy the exisitng hair and older grafts - as I am in an advanced thining stage and no bald area exists - just very thin areas.

Hello James,
The difference between old 1993 technology and today's state of the art transplants is night and day. That's assumes you go with a top doctor. There are still doctors using old and bad technology out there so be careful. Stay away from ANY chain like MHR and BOSLEY.

Yes, they can and will place the new hair in such a way as it will not destroy your existing hair. Today they use very small instruments and magnification to make the recipient incisions. That way they are able to place the grafts without transecting existing follicles.

since he already has a big scar in back, I think he should have a strip procedure done with a very long inscission and trico closure and intermal stitches, at the same location as the first scar to have it cut out with the new donor strip.

If you are talking about Dr. Robert M. Bernstein in New York, then yes he is very good. Also in NY, consider Dr. Feller.

After doing some research until you find the same talented reputable docs recommended over and over, send them quailty pics of everything including the donor area scars. They can provide you some options which will be educational in itself. What Norwood class are you in and are you on any meds?

I am on Avodart for a different reason (for about 3 years now) and it has dramaticly slowed down my hair loss (bonus!). But it still continues to thin. I use rogaine out of habit more then anything - I don't know if it works anymore.

I would be about a 4 or 5 - but I had a session so early that it never got to that extent. I have total coverage with very thin hair.

I am just trying to determine if I shoulf try the newer procedures.
I am admitidaly gun shy from my last expereince. In retrospect - I would just shave my head - but now that is not an option since I got a bunch of hole punch scars (which you can't see if the hair is a least 2 inches long).

New to this board - glad I found it - thanks for the help.

i think you can probably have the damage fixed by creating a new hairline to hide the punch holes. my procedure was done with pinpoint technology over 3 weeks ago and most of the transplanted hairs have fallen out and my scalp is pretty smooth. no punch holes at all. technology has come along ways and the procedure today is almost painless. the most painfull experience i has was getting the staples removed. give it a shot, it may change your whole life.

good luck
