Questions on 11 month Post-op

I have a question for you guys regarding my circumstances, I had 1800 grafts put in by Dr. Rose July of 2005, it was the strip procedure. Since then I have been taking 1mg of propecia every other day and been using Nizoral twice a week. I am at the end of my 11th month, and i have noticed improvement from last year, however, i don't feel like all of the grafts have grown in, I would say may be 40-50% has grown only.

For example, at the hairline, one side has grown in pretty well, while the other side of my head hasn't filled in at the hairline. And for the side that has the filled in hairline, the hair hasn't thickened behind it very welll, and the side where the hairline hasn't grown in, the hair did fill in decently behind where he placed the hairline. I dont know what to think.

At the 6 month post-op the doctor said that it was normal to not have even growth and to give it some time but when i saw him a couple weeks ago, he himself said that normally by this time most of the grafts would have grown in. He did say "normally" and that some rare times it takes longer. He told me to give it another 2-3 months and we will decide what to do from there but i'm a bit worried. Another notable thing is that when i press down on the front of my head where he put the grafts, for example when i pat my head to dry it after a shower, i can still feel a sort of sensation, almost like a mild throbbing or something, i can't really explain it, and i do still feel a few little hairs growing in at certain spots.

I want to know from you guys, why would it take this long? Have you heard of people who just don't get the growth from all the grafts? Have you heard of people who get full growth, but it just takes longer than a year? I dont know what to do, i dont want to do another procedure later at the risk of not getting growth again, but may be i should be patient, i dont know.

the Dr. suggested maybe i've had more loss over the past year, but i dont think so b/c i noticed less loss since i started the propecia, i do only take it every other day to reduce my side effects but i still noticed a difference. Also, the areas i'm not happy with in terms of growth are areas that i had little to no hair before the procedure anyways. And there is some growth but not to the density to which he grafted. Any advice would be helpful!

Go to the healthfood store and buy yourself a nice fat bottle of MSM capsules.. It makes your hair and nails grow faster , twice as fast .

Take at least 6 grams a day - 3g with breakfast and 3g with dinner ..

If you really want to make your hair grow ultrafast, combine the MSM with horsetail . This you can find at your healthfood store as well.. Only thing is horsetail makes you thirsty so drink a nice jug of water after taking it .. And horsetail is not parts of a horse's tail , horsetail is a plant found in jungle territories .

If you go to the natural and vitamin board here on this site, you will see what I am saying is true ..

If you took that stuff when you first had your transplant, you would have had full growth at the 6 month stage..

All the best,
SNB

Thanks, do you think it's too late though? As it has been 11 months now. I'll give it a shot, but I'm wondering why other people seem to have growth either way after 6-9 months?

madhoos,

There are definitely differences between patients regarding every aspect of surgical hair restoration. Everything from re-growth to shockloss to healing to itching and so on.

It is difficult to make any reasonalbe comments since we lack good quality before and after pics of your case. I always advise patients to have digital quality pics done from every angle so there is something concrete to compare in the future.

Anyone who has any hair in or near the recipient area is subject to some degree of shockloss. And yes it's possible to look thinner in a given area related to shockloss and advanced progression of male pattern baldness from the trauma, even one year post-op.

MSM can speed up hair and nail growth. Minoxidil can promote quicker growth too. But I agree in that you should give it more time, at least 14 months post-op because you may be a late bloomer.

As much as anyone would not want to hear it but yes it's always possible that you may not respond as favorable to hair transplants as others. Whenever we see others appear to achieve a better result, we ask why not me? That's understandable. But only more time will tell how you will ultimately respond. Hang in there for awhile yet because as you said, you feel more growth coming through.

Thank goodness you did choose a talented reputable surgeon who's been doing hair transplants for a very long time.
