Quick question for those who have discontinued minoxidil

Hey, Im new to the forum and was looking for some advice from those of you who have been on minoxidil and had to stop.

My story is basically this: About a year and a half ago, I noticed some mild thinning at my hairline (I'm 25 and I was an NW2). My family thought I was crazy when I told them I thought I was losing my hair, but I still went ahead and saw my dermatologist about it, who said he noticed some thinning, but not really that much.

Anyway, he told me my options were basically propecia and/or rogaine, and after doing some research I decided to give rogaine a try since I didn't want to risk the sides with propecia. Since I was a little strapped for cash, I went with the Kirkland 5% brand.

Initially I applied it twice a day pretty consistently and had no side effects other than the occasional minor shed, yet never saw any real benefit or growth. About three months into the treatment, my hair started flaking up like crazy (gave Nizoral a try to combat this but it only led to an allergic reaction), so I began using it only once a day, which helped to an extent.

After several more months I still wasn't noticing any growth or benefit whatsoever, in fact it seemed my hairline was getting a little more eaten up where I was applying the minoxidil. It wasn't necessarily receding more, just becoming thinner at the front. I thought about quitting, but saw that most didn't see results until a year into the treatment so I decided to stick it out till then.

Just before the one year mark (still with no results) I started experiencing an abnormal tight feeling in my chest. My doctor didn't find anything out of the ordinary but said the minoxidil probably wasn't helping my situation, so I finally decided to get off the stuff.

All was going fine until I experienced the dreaded shed about 2 months after I stopped. I used to lose a few hairs anytime I took a shower or combed my hair, but was starting to see clumps and clumps of my hair fall right off just from touching it. Additionally, what was for as long as I can remember just a mildly thin hairline has severely thinned to the point of easily being past an NW3.

So finally here's my question; has anyone who stopped minoxidil, and has stayed off it seen some of their shed hairs come back? Also, how long did the dread shed last? It's been almost 4 months since I stopped yet my hair is still continuing to shed like crazy. Any help would really be appreciated.

Well since nobody answered my question, I guess I'll just go ahead and answer it myself. The answer is YES! It's been over 6 months since I stopped the minoxidil, but the massive shedding has finally stopped. Over the past couple of weeks while I was showering, I noticed that about half the hairs I was used to seeing on my hand when shampooing.. Additionally, it looks like the areas I put the minoxidil on are slowly starting to come back and look a little bit thicker than they did a couple of months ago, even the temples!

I must admit, this was not an easy process. From February to June, it seemed like half my head was coming out everytime I showered, and my sink and shower drain even clogged with all the hairs that were coming out. It's still doesn't look nearly as good as it did before I started the minoxidil, but thankfully things are starting to turn around, and I won't have to spend my life a slave to that stuff!

Thanks a lot Mate.

I'm in the same boat, I quit minoxidil 2.5 months ago because of severe headache problems (I used minoxidil for 3 years), now waiting for shed to complete so that I can get a hair transplant (Considering Dr. Feller fue).

1. Still shedding tons and tons of hairs but I still look ok with buzz cut, is there is any chance it may get very worse in next few months like slick bald :( ?
2. Whether regrowth is enough to cover your hair thinning area?

Thank you!

Regards,
Ditto.

1. The shedding always seemed to get worse before it finally got better, and you may respond differently than I did. I was only on the stuff for about a year, so your hair might have been more used to it. I was thinking about going on finasteride, and my doctor even gave me the prescription, but told me that if I wanted to try a natural remedy first, I should give biotin a shot. I've been on the biotin for about a month and a half now, and while I don't notice any huge difference, it's very likely that it helped out.

2. Like I said, the areas have not fully regrown, but they definitely do look better. I started using Toppik to cover up the really thin areas, but I haven't been using it for the past week and I think my hair looks fine even without it now.

I think the key here is patience, although it really really sucked for the months when it seemed like all my hair was going to fall out.

So you quit and after several months your hair becomes thicker? Is it possible that your hair took that long to respond and your thickening after quitting minoxidil is just a coincidence?
