Receding hairline at 19? (please help)

Hey guys,

So I've never paid any attention to my hairline until a couple classmates pointed out to me I may have a receding hairline. As far as I know, I have no bald individuals in my family (including my mother's parents). My parents said this is simply the type of hairline my family has. However, I am not convinced. I'd really appreciate some second opinions. I am highly considering visiting my primary physician as a receding hairline at 19 seems quite out of the ordinary.

Thank you for any input.

It would be better if u pulled your hair back so u can see clearly the hairs at the front. I cant tell if you have male pattern baldness or not by those pics

No family history at all? From either side of the family? How about uncles and grandparents?

Sure, here are additional pictures.

Noone on my father's side has any history of hairloss (my father is 60 with a full head of hair). Noone on my mother's side although my grandfather started losing hair in his late 50's/early 60's but I assume that is normal.

It might be a mature hairline, it honestly doesn't look that bad.
I'm a Nw2 and from what I can tell I look much worse, well naturally because my forehead in comparison to the rest of my head is massive...

It's so strange I have a tiny head, yet my forehead takes up most of it :/
I should have had a low hairline, yet for some reason I got ****ed.

To me, it really looks like male pattern baldness. The overall shape of your hairline really points in that direction, and the recession seems to be too far progressed for a mature hairline, also it looks like there is some miniaturizing in the relevant areas going on.

MBP can be a real b**ch, even if there´s no noticeable family history you can still be affected by it, your mother could´ve inherited it from her mother and passed it on to you or something stupid like that.

You should visit your dermatologist, he will give you more of a professional opinion, and if he confirms inherited hairloss, you can start treatment an hopefully keep your hair, probably even see some regrowth.

Also, losing your hair at 19 really isn´t that ordinary, a **** ton of males experience MBP before the age of 18, its just not that noticeable because they technically still have hair... if you start paying more attention to other people´s hairlines, you´ll probably notice that hairloss in young people is sadly quite common.

Thank you for the input, I'll schedule an appointment with a dermatologist as soon as I can. As far as treatment options go, are there ones that truly stop male pattern baldness from progressing? The reviews I have read seem to be highly varied.

Finasteride/dutasteride is the only thing that can stop your hairloss

Are the stories of erectile dysfunction and decreased sex drive over-exaggerated? For someone who is 19 this side-effect may be as deleterious as the condition it's meant to treat

Yes they are exaggerated. A very small minority of men on finasteride/dutasteride get ED, and if they quit then they return to normal, so there's nothing to be lost in trying. Also correlation =/= causation, it may be that a large proportion of the minority that experience sides have another cause, ED could be due to stress, psychosomatic due to the scaremongering, it could be age related, and some of the stories are fabricated. Fact is there is nothing to lose in at least trying finasteride. You can always quit.

This is where I am at a loss. Don't some reports indicate it may take months, even years to bounce back from adverse finasteride effects? I may use a finasteride alternative for 6-12months and before considering a prescription.

How does this work as a regimen?
1) Nizoral 3-4x a week
2) Revivogen (for use as finasteride alternative) on Nizoral off-days
3) S5 cream nightly
4) Rogaine or Tricomin spray nightly

Thank you again for the help, this has been a high cause of anxiety for me.

Dude use rogaine mornings or use s 5 morning dont use both same time not bad but at least try 3 months finasteride so your dht levels in scalp will decrease and s 5 cream will icing the cake

any regimen with finasteride or dutasteride is bad. It takes a few weeks to bounce back (3 or 4) at most from finasteride. The reports are hugely exaggerated and it is laughable how worked up people get over them on forums. You would think it turned people into women the amount of fear it produces. take finasteride daily. I am 19 as well and take .5mg dutasteride daily which is about 4 times more potent than finasteride and have no sides (And already had T and DHT on the lower side when I started taking it)

I visited a dermatologist a couple days ago and when I consulted him about finasteride he said he wouldn't recommend it for someone at this age. Surely the side-effects can't be that exaggerated if a doctor advised against it

without* I said with in that last post. The only way you would be too young for finasteride is if u hit puberty late. I saw a derm to get a finasteride prescription when I was 18 years old and he would not give it to me but not because I was too young. He was perfectly open to giving it to me at that age. Plenty of doctors give finasteride to teens. The doctor advised against it not because of the sides for an adult but how it could stunt the development of someone who is undergoing puberty which you probably aren't at 19 unless you are a late bloomer

Better than nothing I suppose. Only think nizoral will do is cure your dandruff. Revivogen is not a finasteride alternative. S5 is a good call, it blocks androgen receptors so will help prevent follicle miniaturisation, but it;s not as effective as finasteride. You probably will continue to experience follicle miniaturisation or balding with this regime, but the minoxidil will give your hair a boost for a couple of years and the S5 may slow things down to some extent.

Side effects almost always resolve themselves in a matter of months, not years, and the bad side effects like ED are very rare. I think gambling on the very small chance that you will get ED for a few months vs the very high chance you'll keep your hair is a pretty good bet, but not everyone agrees.

My advice would be to stop reading horror stories on the internet and just jump straight on finasteride. The less you read about side effects, the less likely you are to experience them.

I suppose I'll schedule an appointment with a different dermatologist who may prescribe it. I'm assuming 3 months is enough time to determine if you are prone to experiencing side-effects? If there are no side effects though, does the drug then become a lifelong need?

At this point, puberty is either completely done or near an end. The dermatologist that I visited is the kind that has a personal belief against a lifelong reliance on drugs aside from the ones that are lifesaving.

side effects typically occur at the start if they do occur, and may get somewhat better with time. It is much rarer for someone to have no sides and then have the sides come on after years of use. The finasteride is a life long need as long as you want to keep your hair. When you stop it will fall out again
