hey people. recently in the news etc there was loads of stuff on how soy prevents dht from working and so mite prevent prostate cancer and baldness, and thats why orientals have lower rates of prostate cancer cos their diet is high in soy. so i was thinkin as vegetarians have to eat loads of soy to get theyr protein does anyone know any lifelong vegetarians who have gone bald? cos surely this would prove whether the soy talk is true?! the only ones i know are uri gellar and billy connelly and they rnt bald r they!?

anyway this could be interesting cos i know that it has actually been proven that soy inhibits dht.

apparantly tho it could also be a cause of infertility in men, so maybe its not all good news. id appreciate anyones comments

1. The biproduct in the intestines of digested soy was shown to affect a chemical reaction related to hair loss. Going from knowing that to having a new hair loss treatment is about 20 million dollars and 20 years with a big risk of not much results, unfortunately.

2. They prefer to be called "Asian" not "Orientals" these days ;-)

First of all, shouldn't this be in the "Experimental Treatments" message board?

Second of all, people in Asia (let's call them, Asians) have just as hard of time with hairloss as the rest of the world.

Even with the orange peel + alcohol magic treatment.

Im half Asian and Im also lactose intolerant. If I drink milk/cheese/dairy I feel like I am digesting 20 golf balls! I drink soy milk in the morning and chocolate soy milk at night. Iv beed doing this since 7th grade, Im now 25.

I really cant say weather soy slowed my hair loss down or not, but I am loosing it and I do drink soy.

its the equol in soy that prevents DHT from binding to the receptor

its raises LH and thus Testosteron.. but als DHT ..but the DHT is prevented to bind to the andorgen receptor (in this case the prostate)

the next articel is in dutch but the figures are from the artikel and in english

cheers 4 ur responses guys.

so hpower have you lost alot of hair then? and yeh so anyone know anyone whose been on a high soy diet (possibly vegetarians), whose actually gone bald?

im not actually suggesting this is a definate remedy and im gona drink soya milk all day, but the science seems logical, so maybe adding a little more soy than usual could be a useful thing to do.

You have really got me thinking on this! If I didnt drink soy would my problem be worse?
I read a while ago about women who drink soy during menopause and the way it changes estrogen levels. Maybe there is a link?

I hate to be a downer, but I guess that's my job.

Please keep in mind that just because something inhibits DHT or binds with the receptor, does not necessarily mean it will stop or help with hair loss.

I know you're saying "maybe"... and that's good.

But when it comes to hair loss treatments, maybe is like "almost": Its only good with horseshoes and hand grenades (as they say).

Lets think scientifically:

1. How much would you need to take? Nobody knows. Just taking some arbitrary amount every day is pretty much pointless.

2. What else does soy do to the body? It increases estrogen. It makes some people very uncomfortable. Others - its a great relief from milk.

3. We know from things like Green Tea that you'd have to drink like 20 gallons a day just to get the DHT inhibiting effects that Propecia provides.

4. We already know about some seriously clinically PROVEN products that inhibit DHT (Propecia) and bind with receptors (Topical spironolactone). With the existence of these products, there's really no use to go sniffing around looking for a grain of sand when you're already on a beach.

This is why someone needs to start testing "natural" products for medical conditions. It would be great to actually have some information on them that we could actually do something with. :)

I'd say it would be a practice in futility to start drinking soy because of this article, until more data comes out. But its your choice :)

yeye ur right. iv got no intention of drinkin it as a "cure"! i just dont see the harm in drinkin that instead of normal milk. considering i only have like 1 glass a day and every1 recently is bangin on about how it "lowers cholesterol" and is gd 4 ur health etc. i was only really askin outa interest 2 c other pples opinions on it.

i know u say propecia is like a million times better at stopin dht workin, but im 19 and iv heard 2 much stuff sayin

-lowers ur libido
-hair becomes dependant on it
-it costs like 100 dollars a month.
-isnt tested 4 long time health problems

and uno the stuff that obviously it has to mess with ur hormones just worries me far 2 much.

-Doesn't lower everybody's libidos, and for some of those it does, that subsides
-Doesn't cost 100 dollars a month, 55CDN for real Propecia, and way way way less if you quarter Proscar tablets.
-Hair doesn't become "dependent" on it per se. It's not like minoxidil, but it is a treatment you need to stay on as long as you want to keep your hair. You need to fight the DHT for as long as you wanna keep that hair.
-Nothing's really been proven on its effects in the long term, and the 5 year studies showed no real health problems.

Hpower,

I've been lactose intolerant for over 10 years so I drank soy drinks to substitute the calcium. Last year I read that drinking soy long term can cause hypothyroidism which can cause hair loss so I stopped drinking it. I've been off of Soy for 6months now but it hasn't helped my hairloss.
