Hello,

I visited a U.K Pharmacy today (Boots) with regards to the hair retention programme they supply. I had a consolation and was told because i wasnt thinning on top she wouldn't supply me with Propicia.

Please take a look at me picture as see what you think.

Use for what? Your imagined hair loss? I think what that doctor did was the responsible thing.

If you're still convinced for some reason, you could use the most naturally potent OTC DHT inhibitors like Zinc + B6, Beta Sitosterol, Saw Palmetto and Green Tea, Topical MSM cream etc, stay away from high fat foods, and use Nizoral shampoo. But that all seems unnecessary for the image you're showing here.

I don't know what the laws are regarding Rogaine in the UK, but I'd recommend staying away from that until you really need it, because you only get about 4-8 years of mileage out of that (10 at best usually), and you don't want to waste those years on paranoia.

Hey, I have been reading gourmetstylewellness.com forums for over 3 years and never registered, saw this and seemed similar so thought I would do so.

I was in about 27/28 and had a similar hairline- that is not a good feeling, knowing that it's not bad but you can see it is going to get worse. I went to Boots and was turned down for Propecia because at the time I was "barely even a NW2", and you have to be at least a NW3 (or showing vertex action) to qualify for their hair retention programme.

I went back 6 mths later. I thought I had gotten a little worse, but again no dice. My doctor had refused a prescription as well (he actually read me the medical textbook definition of finasteride and the side effects, without stating that these were POSSIBLE side effects). I spent 120 pounds on a trichologist appointment which lasted 20 minutes, told me nothing I didn't already know thanks to gourmetstylewellness.com, and where I was recommended to use Rogaine first off (which I knew was stupid).

I got propecia by going to another branch of Boots. The person appraising your situation there isn't an expert in hair loss and if you can convince them they will probably start you off. Remember, they are a business and want your money. From what I have seen, they still offer the cheapest brand name Propecia around if you are on the correct price scheme (I live in Thailand now- it is slighly cheaper here but on a Thai salary it works out to be more expensive!).

I honestly think that if I had started sooner on Propecia and hadn't wasted 6 months trying to get it properly, I might be in a better position now. No-one would think I was bald, but it does get a little more receded with each passing month (maybe NW2.5 now, though it would take very little to get worse). I've been on Propecia coming up to 3 years, and though I agree with a poster above that it might be best to "ration" using it considering it may only last a short while, you can't tell when male pattern baldness will have gone too far to easily stop or slow down with meds

I would think I had less recession than the OP when I was older than him. The trouble is, you just never know when or how fast male pattern baldness will go. It's all a gamble, and that really sucks :(

Sorry for the long post, just the story seemed familiar...

As I said, it's a real gamble. Should you start now, then you get a lot worse before you are 30 cuz your DHT is too much? Do you delay and risk being too advanced for Propecia to help? Do you start now and don't see a huge change for most of your life, and then realise you have spent a really huge amount of money on something you probably didn't need in the first place? (I worry I'm on that last one- I think I'm a bit worse than you, but comparable, but is this my mature hairline and I just pissed away nearly 1000 pounds so far?)

My opinion, such as it is, is that your hairline is good for now but seethrough in some places. This can be natural, but I saw my corners get eaten away in a couple of years, and I can see that large-ish gap forming in the right centre- I think that clump of hair to the right of that might be a target for miniturisation. Don't get me wrong, no one except other receders would notice right now, but think the texture of the hairline looks a little unstable, and all those hairs which are now detached from the hairline and just sit there on their own- I would make a bet that you see more of them the more you look? Same for my story. :dunno: I see others are telling you not to do it yet, but it's a really hard call...

Of course, you have to remember Propecia isn't designed for receders anyway- I've read lots of threads saying it wasn't tested on the hairline and it should work if you catch it in time, but it is the most difficult to treat. :(

I haven't read all of your stuff- what's your family history like?

I hopped on Propecia because I don't know enough about my family history, even though my dad has pretty good hair for someone nearly 60 (and still pretty dark too- git). As it turns out, I found out recently his brother, who had some really thick hair going on into his 40s, is now quite bald, though his seems to be diffuse. That's what I mean, opinions, drugs, family history- male pattern baldness is all a big crapshoot!

I don't know how it works over in the U.K., but 1,000 pounds would buy me enough finasteride for 15 years.

Finasteride will help with male pattern baldness, period. Ashking is very young, he could easily see benefits in the frontal area.

I never had sides, touch wood (no pun intended). My hair is okay but hairline is choppy and left hand side has a nasty recess that jags in- I think it wants to look like Richard Nixon :sobbing: . I'm sure I make a lot more of it than there looks to the average person, but my hairstyle changed to the straight forward or down look a while ago.

If you have a definite family history it's a concern. I agree propecia would help a 23 year old with good hair to keep it mostly looking like that, but it's touch and go. I might have had a better hairline when I started out, but it has got a little bit worse, definitely (admittedly I was 5 years older so may not have worked as well as it could have) .:dunno:

BTW, Boots works out to about 30 pounds per month. I did look extensively, but for official Propecia I couldn't find anything less than that, even ordering online. I just can't trust generics, and don't trust myself to cut Proscar properly... So, over 3 years, over 1000 pounds. I think I will have to make some cost cutting measures soon.

There is absolutely no harm in using the Rogaine foam once a day on your hairline and temples. Its easy to apply,no sides and can buy you enough time till you get on finasteride.Of course you would have to apply it as long as you want hair in that region/until some better option comes along but personally,I can assure you that its totally worth it.

No your hair looks good right now.It started out for me similarly and then it started to recede again with hair loss on the sides.Even I couldn't get a prescription for Propecia so right now i have to use Saw Palmetto and Rogaine foam to stop and improve things a bit.

My receded hairline has always bothered me and I can tell you things are beginning to improve in the front. If the receded hairline worries you a lot and limits your styling option then I suggest you try Rogaine. In my case the real trigger to the Rogaine addition was the onset of unhealthy, weak looking hairs appearing in the front accompanied with progressive recession.
