Retin-a

Hello all. I would like to see if I can make minoxidil more effective as my results thus far have been less then stellar. I've heard retin-a alone may regrow hair but also prepares the skin for better absorption for minoxidil. Does anyone have any experience with this and would a 0.05% gel/cream be ok to try? Thanks.

It would be better if you could start with lower strength of 0.025%. To start with use once a week and then gradually increase it to twice a week or until your skin can take the full force of it. More doesn't mean better and it is certainly true with retin-a it can give you raw, burned like skin if you misuse it. Dr Lee's liquid version was good but I guess you could use any other version. Night time use is also preferred to day time use as the retin a makes skin more sensitive to the sun.

Good info thanks. How long should I wait to apply minoxidil after retin-a? I plan on using it primarily on the hairline. From what I've read it helps with wrinkles as well.

Yeah lot of people use it for its anti-aging properties. Personally I used it twice a week, Sunday mornings on its own while lazying about in my house and once during the weekday at night; minoxidil first waited an hour then retin-a. Some people apply the retin-a first wait for a while then apply minoxidil. Try both methods and see which one works for you.

I'm going to search CVS after work to see what I can find. Was thinking of mixing a little of the gel into a Kirkland bottle and applying it.

I read a bunch of studies about retin-a. I would advise against it. I know there's one study that shows it enhances minoxidil absorption, but there are other studies that show it reduces the anagen cycle( in fact that very same study proves that as well). Your better off using a t/sal to exfoliate the scalp, then apply minoxidil. T/sal has salicylic acid, which has an aspirin like effect on the scalp. I don't know if it makes a good prostaglandin d2 inhibitor, but its worth a shot since its also an anti-inflammatory.

I actually tried retin-A and started losing hair very fast. You can try a low concentration and see what happens if you like. Something like .01% should be fine, specially since rogaine is drying and irritating enough as it is.
