I have a son who will be starting college in the fall- for the past 3 years he has been losing a lot of hair- Particularly receding by his temples-
We are not sure if revivogen The oil and the shampoo has done anything - The jury is still out -He is very outgoing and is extremely unhappy about his hairline-

Any suggestions- where shall he start- He also is taking- 5 mgs of Biotin

What do you know about Revivogen oil and shampoo?

Thank you..

they're pretty worthless next to propecia. i would talk to a doctor about getting him a prescription for that.

If the doctor says he is too young for internal drugs he might use a topical regimen consisting of minoxidil/Rogaine, spironolactone Cream and Nizoral Shampoo.

For a young man at that age, and at the early stages of male pattern baldness, I strongly suggest Propecia/finasteride. It's a bit more of a "maintenance" and modest regrowth type treatment as opposed to minoxidil, but minoxidil is messy to apply, takes time to dry, and not something I would suggest for an active young male for reasons of lifestyle and spontenaity.

Given that his male pattern baldness is apparently caught somewhat early, he has a great shot of maintaining a very youthful hairline by simply popping a single pill a day... how much easier could it be. Be patient and stay away from the minoxidil/Rogaine for now, Propecia should take care of him for the next decade.

I'd STRONGLY suggest he also start using Nizoral shampoo, an anti-fungal, anti-irritant, and mild anti-androgen 2 to 3 times a week, you can pick it up at most all grocery stores. This shampoo maximizes scalp condition and can help fight inflammation in the scalp, which helps with male pattern baldness.

Why is it that I keep seeing statements like this when the manufacturer's trials suggest it'll only work for about 7 years. I'm not attacking the suggestion...just curious.

I've been using a revivogen/minoxidil combo for just over 3 months. I've seen signficiant improvement in one side of my hairline, and a little deterioration in the other. I've gotten a little thinner up front, but somewhat thicker in back. Common belief is it takes 6-12 months to see results, though.

Ask a doctor about the propecia. From everything I've seen, it's a horrible idea to put a 17 year old on it as it can have permanent effects on certain areas of development.

Nobody here has a medical degree, btw. :)

but he's 18 according to the thread title, and it was tested on some 18 year olds in the merck studies I believe. if he's been losing hair for 3 years(like since he's 15), then he probably is in line for at least NW5 in 10 years unless he gets on finasteride.

I don't think there's any evidence it has any permanent effects at all despite anecdotal internet reports. I'm not saying it MIGHT not have but we just need to be careful with frightening people off the best treatment available with statements like this which as far as we know at the moment aren't true and even if true are only likely to affect a tiny minority.

Revivogen may have some effect but it's certainly not as good as the FDA proven treatments like Propecia or minoxidil.

I agree with Gardener that at this stage propecia is the best option as it's much simpler to take a pill everyday than get involved with topicals which can always be added later if necessary.

The downsides of Propecia as reported by the clinical trials are various and range from loss of libido, nausea etc however only a very small % of people experience side effects and of those they usually go away if you just keep taking the drug, i.e just ride it out.

What is the difference between Nano shampoo and Nizoral- which would you suggest -

FYI -
I was photographing a Doctor a couple weeks ago-(that's what I do) anyway he said
the pattern is from the Mother's brother or (maternal) grandmother brother

Is it possible to attach a current foto (hairline) for your opinion perhaps he will not lose any more and it will just reamain as it is- how and where do I do that -the profile page is a bit complex.

Thank you.

Sorry I used the word "decade". I will restate the sentence for clarity...

"Propecia should take care of him for the next seven years, 2,555 days, to the day, give or take one day."

Prescription Nizoral is 2%. Over-the-counter Nizoral is 1%.

The 2% is around 10x better as antifungal, but they’re equally effective for male pattern baldness.

Nizoral shampoo is a medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole, an anti-fungal agent. It should be used 2-3 times X week.
A few studies suggest that the Ketoconazole is a mild anti androgen, that can help a little in lowering scalp DHT levels, but not in a way that would be effective against Male Pattern Baldness on its own.

Nano shampoo (Dr. Proctor) is a regrowth shampoo. It contains NANO and SOD (a hair growth stimulator similar to minoxidil). It could be used on non-Nizoral days.

Yep...there's a graph that shows hair count returning to the base line level after 7 years.

Here it is...it only goes to 5 years. The Propecia keeps working but male pattern baldness eventually drags it down to base line after about 7 years.
