Saw Palmetto as a stall tactic

About Me: I'm 20 and I think I've been losing my hair for about 6 months maybe a year. I have a history of male pattern baldness in my family and I'm probably a 2 on the norwood scale with some very slight thinning on my crown. I've never done anything yet to prevent my hair loss.

I'm a student right now so I'm pretty poor but I don't want to lose my hair. What I would like to do is go to a place like Ashley & Martin or Advanced Hair Studio because they offer a permanent solution to hair loss. I don't know how they do it, but I've been to a free consultation to both and that is what they have guaranteed. I plan to go there when I get the money but right now I can't afford $4000 AUS. I would go on a generic Propecia/Proscar but I REALLY don't want the side effects. So I think I'll just get some kind of herbal once a day Saw Palmetto tablet. Hopefully this will keep my hair in it's current state or better. I just want to stall the Balding process until I can go to one of these places. I don't want my hair follicles dying on me and then finding out it's to late and they can't do anything for me. Does anyone know if this will work or where I can get a value product?

1 pill of saw palmetto is unlikely to help maintain. You will need a lot of it, and the right kind. Make sure there is a high concentration of sterols/fatty acids, otherwise, its useless.

Besides, Saw palmetto has its own side effects, even more serious than propecia sometimes. There is a possiblity of gynecomastia, stomach bleeding, sexual side effects.

I would go on Propecia because it is more effective. I have heard it takes 10X the right kind of palmetto to equal propecia.

Good luck whatever your decision.

If you want to keep your hair, get on the proven meds (propecia).

I know that's not what you want to hear, but that's what you need to do...

Damn. 1 Propecia per day should be enough to maintain what I have right? Is there anyway I can take it and avoid side effects? Please don't say v****...

EDIT: Does anyone know how places like Advanced Hair and A & M are able to permanently halt hair loss?

There are no guarantees that Propecia will stop your loss, but the statistics are in your favor. 83% have a slowing of loss.

Some people recommend taking an aromatase inhibitor to couter the side effects of Propecia. But I would be careful here...those are very powerful drugs.

Side effects are said to be low anyway, despite what you hear on these boards. You may experience drowsiness, slight decrease in sex drive, trouble ejaculating, etc. This occurs in less than 2% of men, if I got that number right. Chances of sexual sides are low.

And even if you do get them, they may lessen with time as your body adjusts to the drug.

Gyno is trouble, but this is rare with finasteride, much more likely with Avodart. But even Jayman doesn't get gyno or even have sexual side effects.

A hair transplant is a permanent solution to hair loss, but it really only works for men who have already lost a considerable amount of hair. hair transplants simply move a limited supply of androgen-insensitive hair from the back/sides of the head to the top, replacing the androgen-sensitive follicles you've already lost. The downside - it is expensive, leaves a permanent scar, results vary considerably depending on the skill of the surgeon and it carries all the normal risks of surgery - bleeding, infection etc. In my view, it isn't a good option, those others may differ.

Yeah I agree.

I tend to think transplants are suitable for men in their 40's who have maybe a bald spot in the back that has developed slowly. Maybe Norwood 3 at the most. They have much donor area and can use propecia or avodart to keep what they have. Its a good option here, but never for diffuse thinners or those with advanced loss. Younger people shouldn't ever consider transplants IMO.

I don't understand. How do these places stay in business? Can't they be sued if they don't deliver what they promise?

hi dinim

here's some info minus the bullshit:

forget saw palmetto for reasons given by other posters above. forget "hair clinics", they're a complete rip-off and will ultimately give you the same medications we're all on but for a massively inflated price. They usually throw in some "lazer" treatment crap to account for the cost. Avoid.

The only type of clinic that will give you guaranteed results is a hair-transplant shop. Or in a few years, hair multiplication/cloning.

Read this: No one is guaranteed side-effects from propecia/finasteride. People don't seem to get this - just because you take finasteride, doesn't mean your dick is going to fall off. It's not an accepted part of the treatment. For example; when you take cough medicine, it makes you drowsy. That's a guaranteed side effect of cough medicine, a part of the treatment if you will. Conversely, finasteride's sexual side effects are *not* part of the treatment. Some people are just unlucky. I have had ZERO side effects from my course of propecia (6 months so far). Only a tiny minority of people get side effects, so please stop worrying about it like I did 7 months ago ;)

You need to do this the other way around; get on the proven treatments and if it's not for you - *then* seek out an alternative.

If you're a student, go the Proscar route and it will save you a lot of money.

hope this helps

Please Please Please - avoid Ashley and Martin & Advanced hair at all costs !! These guys are just rip off merchants. Trust me I know I have been to both. Ashley and Martin provide a permanent solution only if you want to pay about $2000 per year for as long as you want to keep your hair and you won't be avoiding Propecia by going there as Proscar is included in their program. They offer nothing new. Their program consists of Minoxidil with Retinoic Acid, Proscar & Saw Palmetto with a few laser treatments.

In all honesty you will lose hair in the future being so young even on propecia. Just do what you can but be open to losing more hair because it happens to most men.
