Severe Propecia side effects - please read!

yeah... I mean I know what could possibly happen but I think the fear of it might make me think the effects are happening if you see what I mean..

so I fear of a decreased libido, and one day I feel slightly less turned on by a particular film, so believe that it's the finasteride that's responsible. Or make myself believe I was less turned on.

But I guess it's good to know the effects can happen...

Its definitely good to know, but some of the side effects reported have not even been stated on Merck's website. If the pill was really a danger, I think FDA would had never approved it. What about the side effects in the placebo group? No one can explain them. The "psychological" factor is the key.

I was too busy when I started finasteride to get side effects, it's only a few months later when I had some down time that I could concentrate on the terrible, terrible damage finasteride was reaping on my body.

I am now gay, without emotions, my short term memory is ruined, I am now gay, and I find it difficult to smell even the most basic worms.

All the more reason to take the medication under the direction and supervision of a physician.

Mr_sparkles, that wasn't pointed at you, but I see waaaaay too many posters that scoff at that all-too-important detail and order "generic" medication over the internet without speaking to a physician first.

Yep..I have seen even some veteran and Senior posters suggesting not to wait to see a physician, who according to them know a lot less than people on this forum.

Rather they supply links of internet pharmacies which do not require a prescription :wink:

If you're not the paranoia-kind-of-type then yes. But if you're like I THINK you are, then no. Because if you're focused that much on your possible loss of libido, then guess what? It may happen! Sexual performance is VERY mentally related. That's why p**rn stars need fluffers in order to get a hard on. Erection of the penis is not an external organ that works completely on command, it's a part of the body and the mind has (some) control over it - even though it didn't on the last party at my work :-x

I can relate to exactly what your saying and have experienced some of the side effects. This is No lie!!!

I used propecia for two yrs. I experienced having my penis hang to the left side at all times and when i would masterbait, my left nut would hurt a lot and it would shrink or would get sucked in while the other nut stayed normal. I have no idea why it would do that but if i was to have sex and the girl saw one nut gettin sucked in or shrinking while the other was normal, she would think i had just one nut. This is a serious problem i still have the problem to this day and im not been using propecia for a yr and a half now. Im on avodart now. This is my experience, i have no reason to make it up and im not some stupid paranoid retard. These are side effects i still have today and does really concern me.

Thank you for having the courage to respond despite all the negativity now surrounding this thread. If you are now not using Avodart, perhaps you do not rate your problems that severely, but if you wish to discuss this with me further and possibly join the group either private message me or send an email to finsides@yahoo.com. And no you are not paranoid; these are serious and very real problems that thankfully only affect the minority!

This effect is common in men!

In extreme cases you can have a testicle stitched to you scrotum to prevent the muscles doing this, I am not joking about this, it is not serious and will case you no harm.

It is related to the testicles ability to 'withdraw' or tighten in 'emergency' situations, basically when you are about to get run over by a truck, buffalo, or bus a set of lower abdominal muscles pull the 'family jewels' out of harms way. There is a clear evolutionary logic to this trait.

bottom line:

taking finasteride will not turn you into superman, it will not make you immune to medical problems, you will still get colds, infections, muscular disorders, headaches, psychological issues, some will coincide with your starting finasterde (indeed it would be odd if the period of finasteride use was free of all the medical problem that appear in the general population). It is all too easy to attribute them to finasteride use.

And when one of these problems does not cease when the drug is discontinued what do people do? Do they think "sh*t it wasn't the finasteride because I still have aches in my knees/elbows and feet two years after stopping", no they don't they conclude that they have been permanently damaged.

They may be wrong.

:doh: ...ummm...avodart works the same way propecia does. Get off avodart and you'll get rid of the side effects. Unfortunalty it's probably going to take a much longer time to get rid of them after quitting avodart because it stays in your system much much much longer than finasteride does.

wait, on a serious note, this doesn't make sense.

I am still trying to figure out, by WHAT physiological mechanism can/could finasteride permanently damage you, if you are not taking it anymore. I could understand if it caused damage to your joints, or weakened your arteries or something, but it does NONE of these things while you are taking it, so why would there be long-lasting effects involving penis size and libido? With steroids and other drugs, the effects disappear upon quiting the drug...any lingering effects are effects which were known to occur (joint problems for example, heart problems) WHILE you were using the drug.

I cannot figure out how lowering your DHT for say, a year, would cause problems for you the rest of your life, once you got off it? Your body would go RIGHT BACK to making DHT. If it is a problem that is created while you take the drug, like Man-boobs, THEN I can understand. You could stop propecia and still be stuck with the fatty tissue. But your drive should return, and erection ability. There is no mechanism of this drug that would cause your penis to move veer to one side (although most men's do, and it's to the left in case you are curious), or to shrink.

So one question I have is...if all these side effects last AFTER you have taken the drug, although there is no finasteride in your system to cause it, does the NUMBER ONE SIDE EFFECT OF FINASTERIDE CONTINUE? NAMELY HAIR MAINTANENCE AND REGROWTH?

There should be at LEAST one guy who reports "I stopped finasteride a year ago after taking it for a year, and I STILL have a lowered sex-drive, difficulty maintaining an erection and a WONDERFUL HEAD OF HAIR"

No one is really certain exactly what mechanism is responsible. Dr. John Crisler and Dr. Eugene Shippen believe that in some cases, finasteride can cause long-term suppression of the HPTA, even years after quitting the drug. This happens on occassion with men who use anabolic steroids. You mentioned that with steroids, the effects disappear upon quitting the drug. That's not always the case.

I know that Dr. Shippen has had some success with restoring the HPTA with drugs like Clomid and HCG, and that in other cases, he's had success with testosterone replacement therapy. He's treated about 20 different guys with long-term problems after quitting finasteride, and he claims to have a success rate of 50 to 75%. Another guy in Michigan named Dr. Stevens has had success treating these problems with HGH.

Also, there are some studies done with rats that indicate that DHT is necessary for the maintenance of penile tissue and normal erectile response, so in some cases, people with long-term sexual problems may be experiencing fibrosis of penile tissue. You bring up another interesting point: some people have claimed that their hairloss does not resume after cessation of finasteride. Or in other cases, hairloss does resume, but at a noticeably slower rate. I believe the rate of my hairloss is slower than it was pre-finasteride, but I'm not a very good example of this as I have used topicals on and off over the last couple of years.
