Shedding shorter hairs after 1.5 year on Propecia

Hi guys,

Been using propecia for 1.5 years now. Had a massive shed in my first 3 months which destroyed quite a lot of my 'frontal' hairline. Been hoping to get that back ever since. Last few months I have noticed that I dont lose that much hair anymore in the shower and when styling my hair. The hairs that I do lose however are like half of the length of my hair. Could there be a reason behind this (like good or bad sign) or could this be a coincidence. Furthermore, should I give up on regrowing the hair I had when I started propecia (so pre shed) or could it be that those hairs are somehow still 'dormant' and could still grow back? Have there been cases in the past that people only started seeing regrowth after 1.5 years?

Thanks in advance guys!

Bump, could really use your advice guys getting a bit desperate! Are there cases where the shedded hairs only grew back after more than 15 months? Much thanks already!!

Its hard to tell I know some people say they reached there best results on it for 2 years. I think only shedding smaller hairs is good. Makes it seems like healthy large hairs arent being attacked. It could mean miniaturized hairs are growing bigger or miniaturized hairs are growing smaller. Do you seem to be maintaining ? Its always good to take baseline pics to compare how it is working. So you take some now and see how it is doing at 2 years.

Thanks for your reply kmm179! I did not make any photo's the moment I started propecia. I do however have some of a 2 years back so maybe I could compare these to the current situation. Thing is that I lost quite a bit of density in my frontal hair line. Due to this I cannot style my hair the way I used to before.
A positive is that I dont seem to lose much hair anymore when in the shower and while combing my hair (since 3 months).

My biggest question is if I could still grow back the hairs I lost during the 'propecia shed' I had when starting the drugs? Its been 17 months now and I dont really see any improvement in that area. Could it be that for some reason they are still dormant and it takes a while due to the 'hormonal shock' to come back? Or are they gone forever (which would really suck because propecia would have made my hairline worse this way). Thanks for your advice guys! :)

I'm two months into finasteride and my hairline is getting mangled as well! Possibly maintaining crown however. (Knock on wood)

All the best !

Good luck KO21, its really frustrating when a drug you take to make your hair better does exactly the opposite!

Exactly, my hairs looked better before starting generic finasteride.
4 months down the lane, bam, lost all those precious hairs in the hairline. Not sure whether i will regain all those lost hairs :(

My doctor told me, that if the hair is going bad after taking finasteride, it means that the hair follicles prepare to work better. so they pull out the old hair and create a new (better) hair! :)

Damn that is a scary prospect! It's stories like this that make me nervous on starting finasteride :(

A few questions for you OP. Maybe answering these can help narrow down the answers you need as well.

1. How much were you and still taking per day? Like, .5mg or 1mg per day?
2. Generic brand?
3. Did you notice anything else, like side effects?

Status update: My hair has remained status quo.. Cant see any thickening where the shed began (frontal hairline) so that's not a good thing.. Dont really think that I am losing more hairs but the fact that Finasteride ****ed up my hairline is not really a pleasant thought.. I am planning to continue using it untill the 2 year barrier (6 more months) to see if the hairs will grow back.. If not then I will consider quitting the drug.

QUESTION: Yesterday I suddenly felt some testicle pain which worries me a bit because I did not have any sides untill now (except maybe some dry skin). Have people noticed this before? Because I think it is quite weird to have it suddenly after 1.5 years on the drugs.. Thanks in advance!

@Jimbran:
1: 1mg per day
2: yes generic brand
3: Yes yesterday I suddenly had some testicle pain which really worries me.. never had any side effects besides this except maybe some dry skin
