HAIR LOSS AND INSULIN

Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Exciting new research shows that high blood levels of insulin and its growth factors may cause male pattern baldness in which men and women lose hair from the top and front of their heads, while hair on the sides of their scalp continue to grow luxuriously. A study from Harvard School of Public Health shows that men who have the highest blood levels of insulin like growth factor-1 are the ones most likely to suffer male pattern baldness. Women who have high levels of insulin (polycystic ovary syndrome) are the ones most likely to lose hair from the tops of their heads. It still is early in the research, but evidence is accumulating that male-pattern baldness may be caused by high levels of insulin that are produced by eating huge amounts of sugary and floured foods such as bakery products and pastas. We need research to show if male pattern baldness can be prevented by avoiding flour and sugar, eating fruits only with meals and taking drugs such as Glucophage, Actos and Avandia that lower insulin levels.

Now read this HGH product info and keep in mind HGH's hair growth ability

a randomized, placebo controlled study, older adults between 45 and 86 were randomly assigned our HGH formula or a placebo. Subjects receiving the HGH treatment had a 10.8% decrease in body fat, 4% decrease in weight and 151.5% increase in IGF-1 levels. IGF-1, or insulin-like growth factor, is an indicator of growth hormone secretion. This means that our HGH formula actually stimulated the subjects' natural production of human growth hormone. Subjects receiving our HGH formula also had significant improvements in muscle tone, strength, hair growth, sex drive and performance, and energy levels

Pizza and sweets was my main food consumption so there you have it. I would eat half a pizza then finish off a candy bar.

Great Post, i have a HEART MERMOR, which is basicaly is a very fast heart speed, which causes EXTREAMLY fast blood flow, maybe this is why im balding at such a young age? (17)

I speculate that Insulin may "speed up" enzyme activity in the body...this may also explain why caucasians lose hair more often and faster since their diet is rich in those stuff......wheareas asians have a diet rich in seafood products and spices....and it hin there's evidence of low IGf-1 levels in the bodies of propecia takees....

if they have found a link i think its a new exciting breakthru

Background: Androgens are important in hair growth and patterning, whereas growth hormone substitution enhances their effect in growth hormone-deficient men. No previous study has jointly evaluated the function of sex steroids, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in determining hair patterning in men. Objective: We assessed the relationship between circulating hormone measurements and both head and chest hair patterning in a sample of elderly men.
Methods: Fifty-one apparently healthy men older than 65 years of age were studied cross-sectionally. Head and chest hair patterning was assessed by a trained interviewer. Morning blood samples from all subjects were used for measurements of testosterone, estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, SHGB, and IGF-1.
Results: Results were obtained from logistic regression models, adjusting simultaneously for all the measured hormones and age. Men with higher levels of testosterone were more likely to have vertex baldness... In addition, for each 59ng/ml increase in IGF-1, the odds of having vertex baldness doubled...Those who were found to have higher circulating levels of SHBG were less likely to have dense hair on their chest...
Conclusion: Testosterone, SHBG, and IGF-1 may be important in determining hair patterning in men."

Is it true that diet coke raise insulin levels as well? Or is it only sugar-products?

I thoink u can still eat insulin rich foods but u gotta eat foods att he same time which can offset the effect....I guess the best is to switch tot a mediterreanean diet....

anything that is high in carbohydrates (like sweats, pasta, etc), that will eventually be broken down into sugar will cause an insulin surge in your body. you're not really "eating" insulin, insulin is a hormone that your body produces to lower an overload of glucose in the blood. eat 3 regular meals a day (none of this don't eat all day then scarf down like six tons of food sh*t), keep the carbs at a moderate level, and you won't have huge masses of insulin surges in your body. this is my best advice. if you really want to take it to the next level, research online about diabetic diets, this is designed to control insulin levels; eat what they eat, and you should be okay.

Im very surprised that the writers of this piece do not know that Correlation is not the same as Causation.

It could be that high insulin levels and male pattern baldness have a common cause.
This study does NOT imply that high insulin levels cause male pattern baldness, only that there is some correlation.

Yeah but how many fat people do you see with great hair? Almost as many as homeless people.

If some people's loss is down to insulin would meds still be effective?

maybe I should have chowed the hole pizza instead of half.

But this could be just another cause for hairloss. Not the only one. But it's interesting to say the least.....

You need to look up some food lists with GI (glycaemic index), GI is a measure of how quickly the carbohydrate is absorbed, producing appropriate insulin response to make use of it.

But note that although some foods have high GI, they might only contain a bit of that carb in them.

Rice and white bread are very high GI. Replace rice with wheat noodles.

Durum wheat pasta, surprisingly, is not high GI. :)

Avoid sugar containing soft drinks. Eat sweets only on occasion.

Try and eat meals containing carbs, fats and proteins - fats and proteins can slow down absorption of carbs, thereby reducing the insulin spike.

In Australia you can buy a really good low GI bread called Performax, look for an equivalent in your area.

I have tinkered with my diet to make these changes, even if insulin is not yet proven to be a factor in male pattern baldness it means your energy intake is more balanced, you can go longer between meals and have less chance of developing diabetes. :)

What is very very interesting is that this article points out GF-1 as being linked to male pattern baldness but HGH users report hair growth meanwhile HGH raises GF-1 levels considerably. So I propose that HGH's other influences out weight the negs of GF-1 by stimulating the hair cells themselves. So its logical to say a topical application of HGH would be the best approach because then the hair cells will have the benefit of HGH with a minimum of GF-1 increase.See below

Muscles need dht. You can't have a good build without dht so its appearant that GF-1 caused by HGH is causing a raise in DHT!!! There's an obvious link between GF-1 and DHT!!!

what are the product to eat that lower insulin levels? Can we make a list?
I just found the mineral magnesium is a good thing for insulin balance.

Those studies making an observation that IGF-1 causes baldness is actually quite interesting as other studies have shown that 5AR inhibitors actually raise IGF-1 levels in the scalp and that increase is associated with better outcomes.
