hello all,

Regimen:
- 1.25mg Finisteride for little more than 5 months
- Nizoral 2% for 3 months. (every 3 days)
- H&S every-single-bloody-day (except on Nizoral days)

Results:
-went from Norwood 1.5 to Norwood 3
-thinning *everywhere*.. front, sides, back, top you name it, % of thinning is different though, most is on the crown and top and sides. Not as much on the verticle-back.
-before i started treatment my top was pretty thick, the crown was a little thin
-i diffused all over my top and crown. Lost a lot in 5 months
-finisteride definitely was doing something (had many libido complications and teste pain that went away), but apparently didn't work for my hair all that much

Now, I'll be the first one to say that my ill-response to finisteride is rare. But I will also honestly say that it is just not working on the hair. Perhaps DHT is not my problem... but Doctor told me I am definitely suffering from male pattern baldness.

I know people will say it needs 12 months to make a conclusion but let's face it, if it was going to do something significant it would have done it by month 5... month 6 is just around the corner where i 'may see new hair growth' as they say.

I first noticed the signs 10 months ago (and dismissed it as nothing). I just turned 20 two months ago. I don't know. I think I'm fucked.

This is exactly what I'm doing right now. Expect Im on 1 mg Propecia. I'm also almost at the year mark.

-Ok, when you say you went from a Norwood 1.5 to a Norwood 3 does this mean you went slick bald in some areas i.e. hairline has been pushed back...
- I also have had a continous shed while on the treatment, but each time the hairs seem to be growing back thicker. I believe this is because Propecia is cycling bad hairs in and out. Its all a matter of time I guess, but perhaps this is not what you want to hear. One question I have, what is your hair quality... are the hairs you are losing thin, no pigment....Sometimes, in areas that you may have few hairs, Propecia will make you go slick bald only to have hairs come back thicker, this may happen a few times.
- Have your side effects gone away?

Also, have you been taking pictures....very important.

I would keep taking Propecia for a few more months and then re evaluate your situation. It just may be a matter of time, if not you have other options.....

I went from Norwood 1.5 to a Norwood 3 on a diffuser's scale, if I can call it that. right now my crown has some hairs on it but they are so thin that if you tap my head u will feel my skull (5 months ago if u tapped my head it would have bounced back off my hair, especially my front and anterior midscalp). If this continues I expect to have a complete bald spot in 1.5 months (taking shiny shiny now). I think i'm being reasonable considering what 'progress' i have made during the last 5 months.

Pigment is as usual, black.
Thickness of the individual hair is thin, i guess as thin as it was couple months after i started treatment.
The issue is density on my scalp; the amount of hairs on my head. when i say "my hair has become very thin" i mean it has a very flat appearence, i guess because there are less hairs there.

- Have your side effects gone away?
Yep, I went on 0.625mg (1.25 cut in half) for less than a week and jumped back on to 1.25... everything is cool now 3 weeks later

Also, have you been taking pictures....very important.
Yeah, I have... this is the worst part when i have to swallow the fact that i have lost so much ground (looking at my pics before i started treatment). 5 months ago I would use H&S and my hair would get all fluffy and.. well... big and thick.. u could never tell i was thinning... you would think that i had too many hairs.... now H&S fluffs up what i have left in the front and anterior just barely and my crown is just gone (flat level).

I would keep taking Propecia for a few more months and then re evaluate your situation. It just may be a matter of time, if not you have other options.....

yah man, i will continue for 2 more months maybe even 3... but surely if things don't atleast stablize i will have to accept the fact. if things stabalize i will give minoxidil another try (i had too much shedding when i tried it, and doubted its ability to regain even what i had shed)

btw, thanks for replying!

Could you post your photos showing the regression from Norwood 1.5 to Norwood 3 in five months?

Please allow Propecia 12 months to begin working. Merck states right on the Propecia bottle that it can take up to 12 months for Propecia to begin working in some people. 5 months, and even if you give it another 3 months, is not enough time for some people.

Moegreen,

On another hairloss board I am active on a very reputable man who works in the hairloss business (Peter Mac) has stated his crown went slick bald before improving with Finasteride.

I would give Finasteride a SOLID 12 months of continuous and religious use before deciding how effective Finasteride is for you.

Also, have you considered adding Nizoral 2% to your routine? Nizoral 2% is prescription in the USA. You will either need to get a doctor to write you a prescription for the nizoral, buy the 1% OTC version, or buy the 2% on the Internet from Canada where the 2% in non-prescription.

I would hold off on the rogaine for now, let Propecia take its course.

I have also lost a ton of hair on 3+ months of finasteride. Have you been shedding excessively, how much would you say you lose in the shower? Have you been shedding continuously since starting or even before starting finasteride, or has it come in cycles? has your face gotten oilier?

I must say shedding decreased by like 60% after a month of propecia. But it seems that whatever I shed just doesn't grow back. I still shed everyday around 30-40 hairs every morning (i shuffle my hand thru my head just 5 times). I can't tell how much hair I lose in the shower and really don't wanna know.

My face hasn't gotten oilier, but my body has definitely gotten hairier. There's new hair on [EDIT] the top of my hand, the area between my knuckles and wrist [/EDIT] (which i never ever had)... this makes me look like a bit like a werewolf at the right angle lol

I also have these distinct hairs growing on my shoulder. they grow randomly and are pretty thick (as thick as some of my head hairs) and are around an inch long. freaky sh*t, eh? These hairs appear in no order or pattern across my shoulders, they're just sort of sprinkled on there. there are about 20 of them from across my entire span. Also got some small sprouts of hair growing on my biceps, this is new and i expect them to thicken just like the hairs on my hands has.... is that sad or what

what can i say guys...i am definitely overloaded with dht

I turned 20 in December.

AHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Okay, that makes sense. 20!!!!

Its TOTALLLLY NORMAL for you to be sprouting hair in "weird" places. My cousin Paul actually has that same sh*t, he gets long hairs here and there, he is not taking Propecia. Its just a growing thing man, dont worry so much. I think that until about 24 maybe 25 you may start to grow hair on back, more on chest.....you know the drill. Ive been lucky enough to make it this far with no back hair and little chest hair. I have hairy freaking legs and can grow a mean beard! Any who, dont put too much stock into these "weird" hairs, its NORMAL young buck!

Anyways, I better get some rest, been sick all week!

Take care!

Hey Moe (response to PM),

Is your head really itchy? Perhaps ditching H&S (which causes my head to itch rather than the opposite) to TGel - which for me is the number 1 itch killer.

btw - I still am using 5% generic Minoxidil (1ml/day), I think that was responsible for the increased growth in the first few months of my regiment. But I would not have started using it from the beginning it I researched it right.. since now i basically have to use it forever even if finasteride is doing its job.

I would give finasteride a year or so before reviewing it - but if you're really desperate, trying minoxidil for a good 4-6 months will yield some results that are noticeable to you (spouts fuzzy hair) and not so noticable (hair steadly becoming thicker). If you do start to include min - you definitely need TGel or equivalent, because boy does it itch! You could probably start with just 1/2ml twice a day on the worse parts..

And don't be scared of the shed; your hair hasn't dissappeared. But beware of thinning hair, that's the real problem!

Good luck mate!

edit - No, I don't shed during exams anymore. Maybe because I'm not stressed (if you know you can pass w/o studying, why would you!) or the treatment is working.

I've been attacked by exactly this during my last year (without being on any regimen at all). Coincidently this year has brought the most agressive thinning of my hair yet.

I have yet to see if Finasteride manages to decrease my body hair (I'm still only on day six). If that'd happen, I think it would be a pretty good indication of decreased DHT-levels as I've been more or less a caveman since I was 12 and a werewolf since the age of 18. ;)
