Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?

ive been googlin about this because i heard before its bad for your skin and the stuff im readin scares me

now i dont know how much to believe as everything is said to cause cancer etc these days but it has me thinking

http://www.healthy-communications.com/slsalert.html

its said that it "May cause hair loss by attacking the follicle.".

"Is potentially harmful to skin and hair. Cleans by corrosion. Dries skin by stripping the protective lipids from the surface so it can't effectively regulate moisture.

Another extremely serious problem is the connection of SLS with nitrate contamination. SLS reacts with many types of ingredients used in skin products and forms nitrosomines (nitrates). Nitrates are potential cancer-causing carcinogenics."

this ingredient or similar seem to be found in everything. i know the shampoo that i use (head & shoulders) has SLS, i use body washes that i found have it, and probably in a lot of skin cleansers/acne treatments. im pretty sure the acne treatment a dermatologist prescribed me had SLS or another ingredient i read about being bad. does salycic acid shampoo contain it too?

now i doubt it causes people to go bald, as there are millions of people that use shampoos with it that have perfect hair but it might not help. hair loss really isnt what scares me the most now

ive had skin problems like rashes and psoriasis/eczema too which are mentioned in articles about SRS

its used in engine degreasers? that doesnt sound good.........why would they put this in lots of products if its so dangerous though?

It does not cause balding. It MIGHT be a small contributing factor. I would not worry about it. It is in everything. If you go to the moogoo shampoo site, they have a graph which shows their capric glucoside foamer to be the least irritating. On the graph, it shows that sodium laureth sulphate is half as irritating as sodium lauryl sulphate. Sodium laureth sulphate is common too, so maybe get shampoos that have it. They might just use more though.

Problem is anything that can dissolve oils is bad inside the body because it can dissolve cell walls. And just about everything you put on your skin gets absorbed somewhat. And if you oily skin, women might not like it, and cuts can get infected more, and you might stink. You are going to die of something anyway. As long as the shampoo does not kill you nearly as fast as the other stuff, I'd not worry about the shampoo.

SLS was just a stupid effort used by some companies to try to get people to buy their own shampoos, rather than ordinary shampoos and related products: "Buy our high-quality Acme line of skin-care products! They don't use SLS, which causes people to go bald!" :)

What about SLES and sodium laureth sulfate? Or are they all pretty much the same thing?

"The demonstration that levels of Cu,Zn-SOD within the epidermis are significantly reduced following topical exposure to irritants strongly suggests that oxidative stress is involved in the inflammatory process. Importantly, as regards our understanding of the mechanisms involved in ICD, this change appears not to be restricted to dithranol, which is known to generate ROS during auto-oxidation, but also extends to chemicals such as SLS, which are not normally directly associated with ROS generation."

Well..I'd stay away from it knowing that it "reduces" SOD like that. As long as there are other things one can use..

BTW..that link I provided goes into much more detail than the ones I've posted previously when this issue came up.

I will not prefer as I am getting best results from simple oiling and regular hair cut, this is what I have found after long treatments and therapies

I did a bit more research, we should avoid anything with sulfate in it I take it.

I've switched to shampoos without SLS because I think it causes my scalp to break out. I have noticed this also around my mouth with Crest toothpaste and Listerine Zero. Since switching products I have had no problems.

I personally think people way over read into things that really make minor to no difference in the long run. Let me tell you a story. I once was a kid and I washed my hair everyday just like you and that shampoo had SLS in it. I have zero hair loss up through age 20 like brad pitt no exaggeration all hair still there. Now if my shampoo and diet never changed at all why would my hair slowly thin generally after that age? Wouldnt the SLS have had a major effect long before then? Its BS it does nothing harmful to hair and maybe it turns out to cause cancer what really doesnt these days?

I agree with the above, but it probably doesn't help hair loss. Maybe a slight bit of acceleration.

Sulfate does penetrates the skin and it's used in harsh cleaning products. Not sure it's something I would be comfortable with for the long term.

Every little thing you do can help....or even hurt. Maybe if I were still in my 20's and/or had no hair loss..I wouldn't care.

I need to point out one thing in that link/study I provided :) Awhile back when this was brought up it was thought that they used(applied) almost pure SLS(99% concentration) Well...we now know that they used: "Sodium lauryl sulphate (purity > 99%, Sigma Chemical Co., Poole, Dorset, UK) was freshly prepared in distilled water at a concentration of 5%"

Edit..Back then it was pointed out that they use quite a % in (most) shampoos. Much more than the 5% they used in this study.
