Hi guys,

I'm a 21 year old male from the UK. I've been thinning since I was around 17/18 and I've also lost some hair. My crown is becoming more and more visible and my hairline is regressing from the front. I can see my scalp especially after coming out the shower and I've decided I want to do something about it. I had a consultation with two places in the UK and the first guy just straight up tried to sell me minoxidil / finasteride and some kind of treatment. So I had a second consultation with a doctor and she said I should try finasteride and if I ever get any strong side effects I should just come off it (the side effects aren't permanent, they only stay while taking the drug).

Since I'm currently studying at University I'm pretty low on money and I've tried buying finasteride but I'm not sure where to buy it. The two places I visited wanted around £400 a year which is way out of my budget. I'm also not sure how much finasteride I should be taking every day and which specific tablet I should buy. It'd be great if you guys could help me.

Thank you and a merry Christmas,
Labor

£400 per year sounds about right for Propecia. Generic finasteride is cheaper. Provided that you have a prescription, you should be able to buy it from any pharmacy.
Alternatively, you could ask your doctor to prescribe you dutasteride. I've recently started taking dutasteride, and have found it cheaper to buy than finasteride. However, there is a greater risk of side effects with dutasteride. I can only speak for myself, but so far (touch wood) I have been fortunate and haven't experienced any side effects (that I'm aware of). Ultimately it's your decision & only you can make it.

Hi Koval,

Thanks for your reply. Do I need a prescription to buy generic finasteride ? Also, do you know a place / site where I can buy it cheaper than propecia ? (also is finasteride / propecia completely the same product under different branding?)

Thank you so much,

i get mine from boots , I am also from the UK. Costs about 45 a month for generic finasteride. I split it into two though and have .50 mg a day instead of the full 1 mg. this works out to be 270ish a year.

Dr Fox is the cheapest place I have found U.K wise.

Thank you for your replies. Is it possible to buy a months supply first (to test for any side effects) and buy more afterwards? Also how many tablets should I buy for 1 month ? (28 - 1mg generic finasteride and take one a day, or should I buy the 28 and split for two months?). At the consultation they were trying to sell me finasteride with 5mg I believe.

Thank you,

Yeah you can buy a months supply first, did that for the first month then bought it in bulk. Was the 5mg proscar? , I think you are supposed to cut them into 1.25 mg.

Thanks Curly,

I'm not sure what they were since they didn't show me but they mentioned it's 5mg finasteride. I've had a look at Dr Fox and I can buy a months supply of 1mg Finasteride for around £20 with delivery (https://www.doctorfox.co.uk/hair-loss-treatments/finasteride.html). I think I'll go ahead with it and see if it works out for me (fingers crossed).

edit: Also, do you take your finasteride in the morning ? (so one tablet with water or how is it? thanks)

Thanks,
Labor

Yeah Dr fox is also a good option , I choose boots since it is right near my house and sometimes icba to wait for delivery lol. I normally take finasteride before I go to bed, I used to have it in the mornings but it made me feel a little fatigued through the afternoon, I take it with water.

I too am in the UK and had recently been looking to buy some finasteride. The cheapest place i found to buy some is from Pharmacy2U, you can buy 5mg for like £8. I'll paste the link here; https://www.pharmacy2u.co.uk/product/searchresults?txtSearch=finasteride
